My wife and I set out for a R&R day in Canmore, standard fare for us to avoid the rigors of startup life. We embarked fully intending to eat at the "restaurant in a double decker bus". And like 3 times prior randomly wanted to eat there and it was randomly closed.
Annoyed I had seen the Das Schnitzelhaus was empty and in need of customers. We were greeted instantly at the front door, sat at a booth indoors (due to sun exposure causing my alter ego lobster man to emerge) and served by a lovely Australian waitress whose name eludes me.
Anyway we ordered, thinking about "shrinkflation" we ordered Haus Chips as a starter and the charcuterie board for two. That was the first mistake, the food, as seen in photos, was vast and abundant. It was well prepared and interesting to taste.
My wife is a foodie, meaning she belongs to the rare class of people who have an enhanced sense of taste. Seriously, I'd eat asphalt given enough hot sauce to dull my senses. The salt balance is off on ice cream and I hear it all the way home. Sigh.
Haus chips rocked. Covered in dill, lightly fried (not drowning in oil) and served with a mild picante sauce. Fabulously done, interesting and not your run of the mill restaurant fare.
The charcuterie board was amazing. Ranging from smoked bacon, to mild sausage, cured meats paired with two cheeses, mustards, breads and German style soft pretzels. Custom dill pickles topped it off the whole thing. My one and only complaint was there wasn't enough dill pickles.
Beer and wine menu are tight. Lopez de Haro a great mid range Spanish wine is a tight choice although not for me today. Their beer list was great but world awarded Fahr brewing pilsner was my choice. Although I'd did muse between that, Erdinger or Canmore Brewings offering.
Sadly our son called mid way through the meal to deal with an alleged bully at camp and some practical advice from mom which ended with talk it out reasonably and escalate as needed. Dad, my advice, is "there is a reason you are taught martial arts, just make sure he hits you first and probably safer listening to mom."
Here is the on thing I cant figure out, the restaurant through peak traffic was empty. How?!?! Service, food and ambiance all 5's. Who isn't eating here? If I lived in town, I'm visiting from Calgary, I'd eat there as much as possible. If you don't support amazing places like this they disappear.
Do yourself a favor, eat here as much as possible. $30 per person no dessert, one...
Read moreThis place tried to create a modern German restaurant experience. This is where the positivity ends. The food was terrible. We ordered the beef rouladen, spätzle, and pretzel as an appie. The rouladen: They did not follow a typical German (Bavarian) way to prepare this. The meat was overly salted. They did not use a real pickle, it was shredded. They only had the pickle in 1 of the 2 roulads. They did not use German mustard, instead they used subpar bacon. I assume to balance out the bland and salty flank steak. The fires were perfect though. The spätzle: Extremely salty and we believe the bacon was fake; however, cannot be confirmed due to the salt level. Could not finish the dish. Pretzel: They served it soft with a grape pairing to buffer the salt. Served with a basic beer cheese sauce and that was the only option. This restaurant has upscale prices but the waiter does not know how to present or pour wine. He did not use the bunt at the bottom of the bottle. This seems picky but when you think a fondue is 60 dollars and can't maintain water for the patrons you really need to adjust your approach. Once it was know we were only getting water, the service dropped to non existent levels. The bill was presented with incorrect items on it and had to be adjusted. Wine needs to be presented correctly.. (taught by a sommelier) the bottle should be presented for approval and then poured from the bunt. Beer: Selection was terrible. Stiegel and...
Read moreWe visited Das Schnitzelhaus this past weekend with some family who are from Germany. We took a chance at getting a table here, and they were able to accommodate 6 of us with no reservations, thankfully, as we were hungry. The lady at the front who seated us was not very friendly, our family tried joking with her about the staff speaking German and she bluntly told us "nobody here speaks German". It was a little off-putting. After we were seated, the server came over and took our drink orders and gave us an explanation on the menu. The server was extremely attentive, polite and friendly throughout our whole visit. Our family helped us decide what to choose, as we've never experienced German food before! It was fun learning about the different dishes on the menu. We ended up getting a giant pretzel as a starter and it was absolutely delicious. The food was pretty good when we got it, the Schnitzel dishes were tasty, however our family told us that they are normally done thinner. The purple cabbage side was way too heavy on the spices and tasted too strong of the spices and not enough of the cabbage. The house spätzle was really good. The flavour of all of our various Schnitzels was very good. The portions are absolutely HUGE. We ordered mainly from the "Small Plates" and were all stuffed to the brim. I would recommend this restaurant, but would hope staff (not counting our server) are a bit...
