We were a group of 12 people, and from walk-in to exit, the experience was not very warm or welcoming.
We were a group of 25-35 yrs, and we were a bit confused at first when entering because the sign said seat yourselves. After standing around for a few moments, we made a move to find seats, an employee approached us out of no where and his approach was a bit aggressive. He asked us for IDs, which I found interesting when the sign said to seat yourselves (mixed messaging) and I noted other patrons walking in with no carding while we were speaking to the employee (maybe they were already inside and carded?).
Then we were told to find our own seats and maybe we need to be split up. Okay thats fine. What blew my mind was there was a section completely empty, and when we asked to sit there the waitress told us the section was closed. The other alternative was for our group to split into 2-3 tables far from one another. Not really something you want to do when traveling from around the country for a cousins trip in Canmore.
I thought the situation was hilarious. Do you want our business or not? We had to pitch and convince the waitress to go and ask for permission for us to sit in this "closed" section so we can sit together. It wasn't really welcoming and I felt like we were not wanted and we were being a huge inconvenience to the staff.
All in all, bad vibe. My cousins felt like we were being received like this because we were brown. I'd like to think the people here are better than that, and it was simply a mix of bad judgment, laziness, mixed messaging.
Leaving two star because there was also some issues with food quality (broken chicken fingers that looked like someone ate before serving) and employees said some things I didn't appreciate.
Edit: I spoke to the doorman at Rose & Crown in Banff and he told me that when they convert from restaurant to full pub, they begin asking for IDs. We did arrive around that time. If instead the sign said please wait to be seated and prepare your IDs, I think a large part of the hostile vibe we felt would have never happened.
Instead when we tried to seat ourselves per sign, it's like someone chased us down for trespassing and then didn't want to offer any help until it got really ridiculous. Also if they are busy during these times, no section should be closed, or they should be on standby to open when needed (which was not offered in our case and needed some begging).
Management: Experiences are very important. Every other restaurant we been to in Banff treated us really well. I invite you to rethink how things are done from an...
Read moreThis place was a few blocks from our AirBnB, so we figured we would try it out. I'm not sure I'd it was just the horrible mix of British and Canadian food, but it was not good. Drinks were decent, typical pub vibe. My 3 brothers, brothers girlfriend, and I went to dinner and to hang out one night.
We immediately moved tables as the one where we were originally seated had chairs that were too tall for the table so all of us were leaning over to reach the table, which was odd.
I got the shepherds pie and it was the worst I've ever had. They brought out the dry shepherds pie swimming in a pool of salty brown, store bought powdered gravy. I could only tolerate a few bites. Should have just gotten a burger.
We got the pork riblets for an appetizer. They were small, dry, salty fried pieces of ribs. Like they split the ribs into thirds, didn't season with anything but salt (no delicious herb/spice rub) and then fried dry and plated dry. Yeesh.
The fish and chips is the way to go, huge fish filets and a bed of fries.
Prime beef dip was OK, nothing to write home about but not terrible.
There was a special pork belly Cuban. It sounds A LOT better than it was. It was a thin stip of pork belly, no fat chunks here on untrusted bread with American cheese. AMERICAN CHEESE. All bread, my brother ate the little bit of meat out of it and left the rest.
Of note, they had a print out on the front door showcasing the 4 out of 5 stars they got from TripAdvisor in 2016. We thought that was a little off until we got the food... any complements must have been from long ago.
If you go for beer and fish and chips, you will likely leave satisfied. Anything else, I'd...
Read moreThe view from the patio was beautiful. The food could of been a bit better and my server was more interested in my dog husky that looks like hers named sky then bring me water after 2 requests but did bring a neighbour and server to see my other dog a rat terrier cross, that looked like hers to and all 5 of us and 4 dogs noticed many if not all server were drunk including our server . But the reason for my lower star review is when I went to pay I stood there, as my waiter was putting the amount in the till for debit machine then move a tray full of drink for a co worker then she smashed the tray into me and drinks flying all over me covered I stood there for 10 seconds and she was saying are you OK? Are you OK? ( your meals & drinks on us Sorry. But truly it was on me all over me. I was ah moment then asked in a daze where the washroom was and said can I get a towel she handed me black napkins that literally disintegrated against my clothes, making it worse. Drinks had spilled into my left shoe also . My server directed me to the bathroom I use the paper towel in the bathroom, and the soap dispenser was empty. Sad thing was that was my outfit for the night to go out, drinking and partying and now I get to wear a jacket as a skirt or drive back to Calgary and change not what I planned for a trip out for the night out. I offered still to pay but they refused. Not my best experience at Rose and Crown tho I had really good memories in Banff location
Kinda really cold out there we were offered blankets Almost when we were done eating they could definitely use some...
