I wanted to reach out and leave some unfortunately negative feedback about our experience at your new location on January 19, 2024. As locals who work downtown, we were all super excited to come in and have lunch, as we frequently enjoy your breads and croissants. When we arrived, we were the only ones in store, but our food (2 grilled cheese, 1 crepe, and 1 French toast) took over an hour (we arrived at 1:30 and just left at 2:50). I was personally very disappointed in the size of my grilled cheese, the lack of cheese on the sandwich, and how it was delivered to me when I asked for it to go. It was placed in a box on a napkin, so the cheese stuck to the napkin, and the ramekin of sauce was wrapped haphazardly in Saran Wrap. Additionally, it was listed as a sourdough grilled cheese and did not list that it was a different type of multigrain sourdough with seeds on it (this is considered allergy information). For a $22 sandwich, this is not at all what I was hoping for during my lunch hour. Severely overpriced for what you get. (Photo shows 1/2 of the sandwich. The ramekin is a small sauce ramekin, for reference) Additionally, one of my companions ordered one of the same sandwiches (which was even smaller than mine), one ordered the french toast (which was a dry cube of toasted bread), and one ordered the hazelnut crepe (which had no cream or accompaniments). Your servers were lovely, but the food was not great at all. I would consider hiring a new chef or altering your portion sizes to fit the price tag.

The atmosphere is inviting, and the decor is charming, creating a pleasant ambiance. However, the staff, while friendly, seemed overwhelmed and could definitely use more support. We asked for our croissants to be heated, but after about five minutes in the oven, they were only slightly warm, and the cheese hadn’t even melted. We ordered coffee to stay, yet it was served in plastic cups, which was disappointing. Overall, the food was just average. The menu lacked visible prices, so we were shocked to pay around $50 for two ham croissants, a flat white, a cortado, and one pastry—an unexpectedly high bill. The quality of the products felt underwhelming, as they seemed to be standard items, possibly sourced from a place like Costco, despite the establishment presenting itself as a premium bakery. Additionally, the restroom was dirty and unkempt, which, even on a busy weekend, was unacceptable. It’s clear they need to hire more staff to improve service and cleanliness.

Being a bakery I had expectations that the crust and dough would be very good. My expectations were exceeded. Absolutely amazing crust and dough on this Za. Unfortunately everything else was merely good. The Salami was good, but overcooked. Uprising also falls into the common trap of Canmore Pizza joints by scrimping on the sauce. While the taste of it is awesome, there is such a paltry amount of it that it is almost non-existent. The pizza was also poorly prepared with most of the toppings sliding in to the middle creating a rather sloppy mess. If more diligence and care went in to the preparation, as well as a massive increase in the quantity of sauce, this could easily be a 5 star Za and possibly the best in Canmore. Unfortunately the dynamite dough and crushing crust cannot save this from the 4 star range, which is disappointing. The potential is absolutely there for this pizza to be top notch and unequalled.

Friday (June 14 at around noon) stopped here with my sister (and her baby) and my father. We ordered 3 pastries, 2 ice drinks and 2 capaccinos. Pastries were served right away. After 5 minutes my sister and I recieved our iced drink. Sister said hers was okay, but my iced Chai lacked flavor and just tasted like iced milk with a bare hint of cinnamin.

We continued to wait for the last 2 hot drinks. After another 5 minutes in which our father ate his pastry on the patio, he came to my sister and I still waiting in the shop for the 2 remaining drinks letting us know he was going to go get the car (which was about 4 blocks away). As my sister and I waited a group of hikers (probably 4 women) and a couple came in. These 2 groups were served their drinks in a timely manner (approx. 5 minute durations)

Due to my sister carrying her baby for over 20 minutes she went outside to sit at their patio and ended up finishing her pastry and drink.

Standing there becoming irritated I realized something. There were 4 batista. 2 brand new and one clearing training the two looking overwhelmed. The fourth disappeared in the kitchen. The owner who took our order and not even giving a smile sitting on her laptop sipping a drink totally oblivious to the pressure crunch happening.

My father arrived with the car then. He told me later that he timed himself from leaving to go get the car to arriving with the car. Took him 23 minutes.

I then became more irritated at the owner than the baristas struggling behind the bar. As someone who has worked in retail and food for 20 years I was flabbergasted that this owner did not pay attention to the comings and goings of her shop. She should have jumped into action and helped behind the bar more and made drink. She did not see the how unoderly drinks were being made or the irritated customer glaring at her from the door way.

I was about to get up the nerve to approach her when our drink were finally done. And honestly after 50 minutes of pacing in and out of this establishment I just wanted to get the hell out.

We always play this game with my father when he visits. He asks what was the best part of our visit and what was the worst part of our visit. When he asked what my worst part of I told I'm "that coffee shop and bakery."

Bottom line:

Croissants: 4/5 They were delicious

Drinks: 2/5 I am convinced mine was milk. But I tried my dad's cappuccino and it was okay

Owner: 0/5 Seemed oblivious to the running of a shop. Wasn't smiling and seemed irritated with people in general. Lacked professionalism in my opinion towards customers and employees. And if you are going to work on a laptop work in the back were observant customers will not notice your lack of empathy.

Barists: 3/5 the boy was trying and struggling. And my heart went out to him as a former manager, no one shpuld see their employees looking stressed and overwhelmed. Lost track of order sequence.

Final Rating: 1/5 Would not return or recommend. There are plenty of other coffee shops around check them out. Especially if you are in a hurry or have a...

We noticed this café on our last trip to Canmore last month and decided to check it out. The interior and space itself is beautifully done! Very modern and sleek. Everything else about it, unfortunately, is quite mediocre.

The three baristas working were obviously overwhelmed with the amount of customers coming in. It was an odd and uncomfortable atmosphere as you could tell they were all stressed and not really communicating with one another, and seemed snippy when they actually did speak to each other.

The barista who took our order was quite curt. Once our orders were sent in, it took a long time to receive them (again, no fault of the staff themselves, as it seemed three people were simply not enough to handle the demand). The barista who made all the drinks unfortunately spilled an entire container of steamed milk at one point (hope she was okay as I'm sure this was very hot and she got quite a bit on her hands). The barista who took our order got visibly frustrated at her and used some colorful language, well within earshot of customers.

Once our coffees arrived, the espresso was quite burnt tasting. We also had gotten a berry cruffin to share. Again, the presentation was fantastic, but the product itself was lackluster. The pastry was stale (maybe due to pastries sitting in the open air) and didn't have much flavor. The cream cheese filling literally just tasted like room temp cream cheese and nothing else. We had taken our orders to go, so we didn't realize all this until after we had left.

Overall, The Uprising left a lot to be desired. While the actual space itself and presentation was beautiful, everything else really lacked. If they put as much effort into staffing and training as they did into their interior design, it would be a stellar place to go to. Based on this disappointing experience, we will not...
