Funny for a cafe to be the highlight of a trip to Calgary. Being the third week without a quarter decent coffee I had nearly given up for my holiday in Canada, but gave this coffee shop a go (based entirely how they were decorated). Other coffees had been purchased and disposed of leading up to this point and I was desperate withdrawal symptoms had subsided, but I still wanted the taste of a good coffee...
Oddly enough, my cappuccino was served with soda water. Much to my confusion (and my general dislike for soda water), it was avoided. The coffee however, had taken me back to my preferred coffee shop back in Australia. It was fresh and not burnt. Such an impression the 'only good coffee' I had in my 5 week trip to Canada it lauded as a success story to the others I had travelled with and to those who I regal my Holiday to, but they do not understand how nice it is to have a nice coffee after throwing away so much of it in an attempt to sate a crippling addiction. I must have had 4 coffees by the time it was time to leave (and they finally caught onto the not giving me soda water bit).
This shops coffee left as large an impression on me as seeing snow for the first time, walking around in freezing temperatures, some amazing landscapes and seeing the Aurora Borealis in person & getting to photograph it. Which is why, when I'm reminded of Canada, I have returned some 18 months later to finally finish my review. Which is impressive given they provided about the coffee I'd expect from my go to cafes. Solid work, if I'm ever again back in Calgary - I will be stopping by to purchase a multitude of...
Read moreI visited Monogram Coffee on the morning of September 14, and while the café itself was nice, the service left a lot to be desired. The two ladies working that morning were incredibly rude. When I asked about their seasonal drinks, one of them curtly responded, “It’s just there in the front”. How was I supposed to know if that was the only seasonal option?
While waiting for my coffee, I overheard another customer ask for the washroom code twice. The other barista impatiently repeated the code, one number at a time, in an annoyed tone. It is really unprofessional.
Then when my sister picked up my coffee, she asked for the name of the barista who took my order (I believe it was Ihoma), and suddenly their attitudes shifted they became lively and started laughing.
I visited this coffee shop on my birthday because of the good reviews, but after this experience, I won’t be coming back. Rude service like this ruins what could have been...
Read moreMonogram Coffee is a gorgeous coffee shop. The owners embrace minimalist design and use the small space efficiently to create a surprising amount of seats. The atmosphere is bright and serene. Unfortunately I only had a tea so I cannot comment on the quality of the coffee or any of the food. There were a couple of drawbacks. Acoustically the space is not conducive to conversation. Perhaps if there are only a couple of people int he shop it might be quieter, but it was often hard to hear the barista, and conversations reverberate around the shop. Luckily I had headphones and that cancelled out most of the sound. As well, While the seating looks pretty and is efficiently arranged, it could use some cushions. The wood is hard and gets uncomfortable rather quickly. Otherwise, I think that this shop has excellent potential and I did enjoy...
