This little strip mall might have the worst parking in the entire city and i'm not kidding, its really, really bad... I cannot recall if there was a drive through here or not and didn't care at the time, since I planned to eat at the location, however as I walked in, I saw that every seat was full, all 6 of them... This location is so tiny and i'm the type of guy, I don't like lukewarm gravy or lukewarm cheese, makes me gag, so already we are off on the wrong foot.
Supreme, Meatlover, Donair, Taco, possibly the feature and traditional poutine are definitely worth exploring here. However, everything else on the menu seems to attempt to cater to different types of people and I understand it is important to diversify, however we are talking about Poutine here and I feel like somebody who is health conscious should probably not be eating Poutine in the first place... Like if your going to go hard into the paint with Poutine, then go hard... When I leave La Poutine, I want to feel fat... lol.
The curds are authentic, the fries are crisp and good, soak up the gravy well, although you will definitely need extra gravy to melt all the cheese and yet, for all its authenticity, the parking and seating of this location just don't make up for it and arguably, Poutine is not something you want to be ordering online/Skip with, since the hotter it is, the more enjoyable it will be, at least for myself... With this being said, La Poutine is kind of more of like a... Souvenir or Novelty shop than actual restaurant, if that makes any sense, in that if you are not trying to have the La Poutine experience, it is overall just incredibly inconvenient to return to this location time and time again... And when you are going for the experience alone and there is no parking and no seating, like, that is a fail.
Im struggling to not drop my rating down to two stars, but I know the staff works their butts off to keep this place profitable, but... The writing is on the wall for this location. Great food....
Read moreThis place is widely regarded by Edmontonians as the best place in town for poutine. I haven't tried every place there is, but being from Québec, I can confirm that this place definitely comes much closer to hitting the mark than the overwhelming majority of other establishments in the Edmonton area that I've experienced so far.
That said, it still misses the mark. A valiant effort, but the sauce is a little off, not enough flavour to it and not enough (far too little) of the sauce is included. Do not try to turn poutine into a health-conscious meal!
The cheese curds are "real" cheese curds, from The Cheese Factory, I believe. But as another reviewer here has pointed out, they are not "St. Albert" cheese curds. I agree 100% that that is where the magic happens, and these other curds, while still tasty indeed, just aren't the same and are missing something tangible. Not as salty, or something else missing from the flavour.
I still enjoy it enough to rate it 4/5, but that's mostly on the basis of every other place around here being so god-awful in comparison. I expect I'm not alone in saying I would be fine paying a bit more to get the...
Read moreOf all my poutinology studies, I came to conclude that poutine has a geographical factor, some could say a curse, which makes it impossible for it to be proper outside of Quebec and its nearest border towns in neighbouring provinces. I've been travelling the world and Canada, trying to get the most unbiased and trialed experience to make that statement untrue.
This poutine, however, comes closest to being the exception for this rule. Really good sauce, nice golden fries which mix well with the sauce. We are this close, this close to being Quebec caliber. The cheese curds, as one would expect due to the usual sourcing issues, are just a tiny bitsy too watery and lacking just a bit of firmness to give it the bounce they need.
Service with a smile with a real communal feel to the place, with the customers passing by seeming to be die-hard regulars.
There also seemed to be lots of nice toppings to put and I will come back for that but for scientific purposes, the first poutine trialed in an establishment must showcase the basics without being hidden in condiments.
Until further research is done, this is the best outside of Quebec in my...
