Visited BG on August 4th to celebrate a friend’s birthday and what follows is a story about a fish taco. The patio was vibing and the sun was hot. As any three females would do on a hot summer birthday celebration, we ordered the daiquiri tower as an appetizer. The menu says a minimum of three people to order the tower and I can see why, it was barely past noon and they had already gone to our heads. To absorb the alcohol we decided to order food. I chose the fish taco, a taco that now gives me flashbacks to a micro phallus I once encountered. Upon arrival, the taco looked presentable enough, even promising, there was no time for introductions and I decided to dig in. At first, I couldn’t feel the fish inside the taco, “was it actually in there?” I thought to myself. But I was drunk and hungry, so I decided to give it a chance anyways. After the first taco, I tried not to be disappointed, maybe it was just a warm-up act, like the opening band that no one came for. Round 2, still a no show. At this point, I began to wonder if the fish was even trying, but given its itty-bitty stature, I suppose it was fighting for its life in there. Now came time for Round 3, the regret and disappointment were my only side dishes and I just wanted to get it over with, so I removed the sad little nub of fish and ate it on its own to get rid of it quickly and finished the taco off by myself so I could feel some sense of satisfaction. When the waiter asked how everything was, I of course lied like any woman in this situation would, I threw on my best Oscar-worthy smile and said, “It was amazing!” I didn’t want to embarrass the taco in public, or worse, ruin someone else’s first fish taco experience. Maybe they wanted something dainty to take their taco virginity. Of course, I had to reassure my friends visiting from Alberta that this was not representative of all East Coast fish tacos. I promised them bigger, bolder, and far more satisfying ones exist, this was just a petite misstep. However we weren’t perturbed by this, we returned to the scene of the crime later that night. All-in-all, would return for the patio and drinks in the future! Perfect location on the waterfront in Halifax.

When I got there met a very friendly host at the front desk, nice guy, first night the ambiance was great with the live music, we wasn’t sure what to drink so we had a couple local beers which was nice. Second night we decided, seeing that it was great on Friday night, we would do Saturday night also. Once again our host was friendly and it was an added touch that he remembered us from the night before, which he announced. Going into the patio area we went straight to the line for our drinks. Line was a bit slow, workers looked very tired and we got a feel that they had a long busy day, something was going on with those two, hot and sweaty, no smiles, no welcoming by then we felt yak and just as low. Then we ordered these expensive strawberry daiquiris, fine we got it in a glass, it looked inviting, but the straw was cheap and by the second or third pull, paper was in our mouth and we couldn’t pull through the straw. Between fighting with the straws and discussing how terrible the situation were with the bartenders, for a good 15mins or more last call came around, we were sour, so yeah so much for the ambiance this time around, our night out failed. Sorry to say! My recommendation either put the prices down on the daiquiris or update the straws. As for the low bartenders get them some help!

Went here twice this week with mixed results. Fantastic experience Monday, great staff, well priced drinks (The lady loves the Miami Vice slushy.) Came back Thursday, and had pretty awful service. Originally we planned to be in self service so I waited in line while the lady caught up with some friends she saw. Waiter buddy comes up and rudely informs me that if we are in “his” side (not marked) then we have a server. Sure, fine. When back at table, i try to order what we ordered 2 days prior; A pitcher of beer to split, and a slushy. Server informs me I cannot have a solo pitcher… i re state we are planning to split it. He gives me some b*lls*** response as to it being hot outside and they can’t give me a pitcher because she already has a drink coming. If your servers are going to baby your clients, i recommend staffing them in a daycare not a bar. Rediculous to be told what to order considering there is a self serve bar 15 feet away. First and hopefully last time i’ll ever leave no tip. we left early to find somewhere else to spend our money.

We walked around the water front in Halifax the night of June 22,2022 and noticed that most of the restaurants were full. We decided to sit down at the BG because they had heaters and some of our friends weren't dress for the cold breeze. There was 9 of us and we look fortunate enough to be seated right away and in the open sun which was a plus. Our server was nice enough and attentive at first but took quite a long time to take our drinks order. Not sure if she had too many tables to look after or if she just disorganized. When she finally (20 minutes)came to our table she asked us for our drink orders and proceeded to ask and write our food orders as well. After a while she brought 2 beer orders and reassured me that mine was on it's way. After 10min still no beer so I looked at her and motioned about my beer and she came to the table and apologized and asked me what beer I ordered. I said the Garrison Ale and I saw you write it down. Still waiting for my beer, the seafood chowder came. It was hot enough but too runny too much dill and too small chunks of fish and clams. Campbell's soup was much better. If you want real seafood chowder tryThe Fish Exchange in St. John's or Chafe Landing in Petty Harbour NL. We had to ask for ask her again for the hot water the ladies ordered 30min ago and utensils for the soup. When the fish and chips came she only brought one we ordered 2. That took another 20min. Still no hot water for the ladies so I inquired and she said she said they don't have lemons for the hot water. I said that's fine just hot water then even though there was a couple of chunks of lemon that came with the fish and chips. After 10min she comes back and says they don't have a pot to make hot water. Wth? You wrote everything down 45 minutes ago but you didn't know that you couldn't serve hot water till now? Wow. That's incredible. Lobster roll I ordered was tasteless better one's in McDonald's. Also when you serve beer wait till the foam subsides. 1/4 of our beer was foam. Thanks won't be...

Terrible service, won’t be going back and will be telling everyone not to go there who are debating it in the future.

Arrived last night at 7:30pm, party of 4. Closing hours on Thursdays are 10pm. We were asked by the young kid at the front if we were getting food or just drinks. We all said both and we sat down under an umbrella. We waited over 20 minutes before I finally asked someone who our server was and then they showed up. But someone still should have come up and been like “hey sorry we are running a bit behind but your server will be right with you!” - but no we sat in the rain for over 20 minutes… unacceptable service.

We then finally all ordered our drinks, 1 non alcoholic beer, 2 cans of cider, and 2 1L steins for the 4 of us and food.

By the time we get our drinks and food its around 8:10pm and soon after we are told multiple times in a very pushy manner by the young kid at the front that we have 15 minutes to finish our food and drinks cause they are closing up early.

We barely got time to drink and eat and enjoy ourselves without the constant harassment from the guy. He was pacing around our table as if to try and intimidate us and make us chug a litre of beer and 2 cans of cider and shove our food in our mouths.

The staff started putting the benches up on the tables around us and we irritated as we tried to finish at a reasonable but quicker pace for the staff. My partner was eating a bowl of fries that still had fries in it and our waitress came over and said are you down with this? Before she stuck her fingers in it and grabbed the bowl as my partner literally had a fry in her hand and is still eating them.

She then voiced her concern to the staff that making us chug our drinks and then kicking us out is not safe or legal which the staff did not care and said you need to leave.

We were all going to go back to Octoberfest here tomorrow, Saturday but after that terrible service we won’t be coming back or recommending this place.

Support local elsewhere, not here. You deserve better, we...
