Oh man. Mixed emotions for sure. I stopped by with my gf on our way out of Square One on a sat afternoon. The bakery is attached to Red's Restaurant.
We opted for a mixed 6 pack of treats allowing us to choose any tarts or cookies. The tarts certainly LOOKED amazing as we walked by the window so we ordered 4 tarts (lemon, blueberry, raspberry and butter) and 2 cookies (M&M, salted caramel).
Unfortunately I feel like we got duped. The tarts definitely looked better than they tasted. The lemon tart was WAYYYY too sweet! The curd is supposed to have a balanced amount of tartness but it was just sweet on sweet.
The blueberry and raspberry ones literally reminded us of pop tarts. You know ... the ones you ate as a kid? The filling was gummy and artificial tasting. Not that it tasted bad per se, but for ~ $3 a pastry, you'd expect something that tasted more homemade and flavourful.
SUPRISINGLY, the cookies were quite good! The salted caramel one I would buy again. I heated it in the microwave at home for 15 secs and it was delicious. Honestly, if we were to visit again, I think we would just get cookies. It seems like most visitors keep buying the tarts cuz they're pretty, but frankly, the tarts are a disaster in my honest opinion. I might try the malted milk...
Read moreYesterday (September 6 at around noon), I ordered one tea and one cookie. The total came to almost $10. My mother said to me (since I was paying), "Oh, that is expensive!" I was happy to pay for it, since my mother would be drinking the tea. The cashier took this comment personally. She offered me the receipt for the tea and cookie, which I declined. She then placed the receipt in front of me anyway, and said, "Here is your order itemized so you can see what you're paying for." She went to the back to make the tea, and when she came back, my mother explained to her that her comment was not something personally directed at her, since as a cashier, she does not set the pricing. She was simply making the comment that 1 tea and 1 small cookie for $10 is expensive.
We wish we had told her to refund us, instead of taking the items. The cookie was not very good. And the tea bag burst in the hot water, so she couldn't drink it anyway. 🫤🫤🫤 Mediocre food served with awful customer service, while being overpriced?? No thanks!!! 👎
Zero stars out of five. We would NOT...
Read moreAbbey's Bakehouse is hands down the best spot for cookies and tarts at Square One! Their butter tarts are absolutely heavenly - perfectly gooey filling with just the right amount of sweetness, wrapped in buttery, flaky pastry that melts in your mouth. You can tell they use quality ingredients and traditional techniques.
The cookies are equally impressive, with that perfect balance of crispy edges and soft centers. Everything tastes homemade and fresh, which is exactly what you want from a bakery. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable about their products too.
Whether you're taking a shopping break or specifically seeking out exceptional baked goods, Abbey's Bakehouse delivers every time. The quality is consistently outstanding, and you can see the care that goes into each item. It's become my go-to spot whenever I'm at Square One.
Highly recommended for anyone who appreciates quality baked...
