Darbar: A Disappointing Experience

During a recent visit to Darbar Restaurant in Montreal, my dining experience left much to be desired. The combination of undercooked chicken, incorrect bread, runny gravy, and an overcharging owner made for a truly disappointing outing.

First and foremost, the chicken served to us was undercooked. It is alarming and unsatisfactory to receive improperly cooked poultry, as it poses health risks and compromises the overall dining experience. The lack of attention to detail in ensuring that the chicken was thoroughly cooked is a clear indication of the restaurant's negligence in food preparation.

Furthermore, we were served the wrong bread with our meal. Such a simple oversight reflects a lack of attentiveness and care on the part of the restaurant staff. It is frustrating to have one's expectations dashed by such avoidable mistakes.

To exacerbate matters, the gravy accompanying our meal was disappointingly runny. A well-made gravy should have a desirable consistency that complements the dish it accompanies. The thin and watery consistency of the gravy not only affected the overall taste but also demonstrated a lack of culinary expertise in the kitchen.

Perhaps the most frustrating aspect of our experience was the owner's decision to charge us more when we requested a substitution for the undercooked chicken. Instead of rectifying their mistake and providing a satisfactory alternative, the owner insisted on charging us extra for a butter chicken dish. This kind of response is both unreasonable and unprofessional, as it punishes the customer for the restaurant's own shortcomings.

In summary, Darbar Restaurant in Montreal failed to deliver a pleasant dining experience. The undercooked chicken, incorrect bread, runny gravy, and the owner's questionable business practices all contributed to an overall disappointing visit. I would caution potential diners to exercise caution when considering this establishment, as the quality of food and service may not meet their...

Just had dinner with 12 friends here. Loved it!

We had a reservation, and they were sharp enough to notice the singletons arrive and wait outside so the matron directed us all, by ones and twos, to the upstairs section.

I had the Lamb Khorma ($14), with Sheek Kebab (Lamb) as an appetizer ($10), a side of Butter Naan ($5 - it came in very handy to sop up the lovely khorma sauce), a chai martini ($9 - gin based, they overfilled our martinis so we all spilled some to our amused consternation), and a Darbar Signature herbal tea ($4). It came to $48.30 with tax (before tip). It was what I expected, but better!

The Khorma was delightful foodgasm in my mouth. The Sheek Kebab was a surprise hit - I had expected 2 pieces for that price, they gave me 4 which I ended up sharing with several friends, to everyone's satisfaction. The martini hit me like a pleasant alcoholic sledgehammer. Lastly the herbal tea was a lovely, calming digestive.

I found the bathrooms clean enough, and the music a calm backdrop.

15 orders put in, including one friend that arrived late. They did some substitutions for us. As far as I can tell the servers (working as a team) got all of it correct and we had no issues with the bill.

I will admit that we weren't an easy group, given how prone to loud distracted conversation we were, but let me tell you when they eventually told us that they would like to close up and clean up, we all left with beaming smiles! You see: we had lost track of time, it happens when you have a great "Dinner with Friends". Staff waited until just before their official closing time to gently remind us of what the actual hour was.

All in all, I found it well worth my money and time, and trust that...

I recently visited this restaurant, and I have mixed feelings about my experience. While the food portions were adequate, I must admit that the overall customer service, quality, and quantity could be improved. One thing worth mentioning is the crazy wait times at this restaurant. It's highly advisable to book a table in advance to avoid disappointment. Despite the long waits, the listing on Google doesn't necessarily recommend this establishment. When it comes to the food, the portion sizes were just about sufficient, but I felt that the overall quality and quantity fell short of my expectations. The flavors were decent, but there was room for improvement in terms of taste and presentation. In terms of customer service, I found it to be lacking. The staff seemed overwhelmed and not particularly attentive or accommodating. It would have been nice to receive better service and a more enjoyable dining experience. Also had a few additional disappointments to share. One of them was the inclusion of two separate taxes on the bill, which seemed rather ridiculous and unnecessary. It would have been preferable if the pricing structure was more transparent and straightforward. Furthermore, towards the end of the meal, I noticed that the staff stopped serving water after the second round. This lack of attention to something as basic as providing water to guests left a negative impression.

A mixed experience overall. Went with an Indian friend who was craving North Indian food which was meant to be this restaurant's speciality. We ordered the garlic naan, butter chicken, lamb nihari and saag paneer with rice. The sauces for the curries were all very good and left a really strong first impression. Unfortunately both the meat and paneer were incredibly tough and overcooked. The lamb was mostly bones and fat, the chicken was cut too thin and was chewy, while the paneer was almost like overdone tofu. It's a shame because the flavours were all there but costs were cut with the main ingredients and, at $24 for an entree, the portion sizes didn't make up for it either. Overpriced as well to make matters worse. The mains should have been no more than $18 like most of the other Indian restaurants in Montreal. While not pictured, I also have to call out their naan as the worst I've ever had at any Indian restaurant. It was thin, burnt and had the texture of overcooked pizza dough rather than naan. Finally, as a positive note, the service was incredibly warm and friendly when we both arrived and left. However, all the other reviews are correct that you'll never get a refill of water or any attendance during your meal unless you go out of your way to flag someone down. Warm atmosphere and I hope they're able to improve as the basics are there.
