We are visiting Montréal and walked into this place because we were hungry after our drive from Quebec City. We ordered $70 worth of food for our whole family and had a terrible experience here.

THE FOOD:

The Egg Drop Soup was bland and watery - to get flavor out of it, we had to add salt and soy sauce, but even the soy sauce was watered down so it didn't taste like anything after adding it.

The Roast Pork was dry and bland - the only way to remotely enjoy it was to dip it in the brown sauce it came with, which still didn't resolve the dryness of the dish.

The wontons in the Wonton Soup tasted like nothing.

Their table Chili Oil is not spicy and seems to also be watered down, adding no depth to any of the dishes we ate it with.

The only dish that was salted significantly enough to taste was the Salt & Pepper Squid, which was OVER-salted and had a 70/30 batter/squid ratio.

The Beef Ho Fun was average.

Every other dish we ordered - Fried Dumplings, Soup Dumplings, Bok Choy with Oyster Sauce, Fried Rice, and Roast Duck were all forgettable.

THE SERVICE:

After taking our order and dropping our dishes, the server never returned until we had to flag her down for the check as she walked by after ignoring us the whole meal. We were the largest table in the half-empty restaurant, right next to the kitchen door that all the workers constantly walked through, so there was no excuse for her to not check on us, especially considering we had 3 empty water glasses on the table the whole time.

By the end, I had lined up our 3 empty water glasses at the edge of the table to clearly show that our waters were empty. Still no attention!

On top of that, we never received the Hot Tea we ordered at the beginning. As we stood in line to pay, we had to remind her that she forgot, and to remove it from the check. When we paid, they only verbally told us a price without a receipt listing our orders, so if we didn't ask about the tea, they would have charged us for it!

She acted surprised and responded saying, "Sorry, very busy!" Remember, we were the largest table in the restaurant. If she was busy, we should have been the reason!

ADDITIONAL NOTES:

Near the end of our meal, as we were starting to feel our dissatisfaction, another customer began yelling about the lack of scallop in his dish, as advertised on the menu. He loudly and angrily accused the restaurant of cheating their customers and that he would complain on social media. The server yelled back at him, calling him crazy and not to come back. Pretty bad exchange. He ended up walking out without paying. You may find his review somewhere on the internet soon.

Considering there was no receipt given to review our orders and confirm the total price that was verbally given to us at the register, on top of the poor service and food, we felt a tip was not warranted. She wasn't pleased to hear this after suggesting we go back and leave our tip on the table (you have to pay up front).

CONCLUSION:

I recommend the restaurant fix their quality and take their service more seriously or else I don't see this establishment's outlook changing anytime in the near future. Wouldn't recommend this place and never...

Regretfully, my recent visit to Ethan left me and my guests deeply dissatisfied, necessitating a review I wish I did not have to write. It's disappointing when a restaurant, half-empty and brimming with potential, falls short in delivering the basic tenets of hospitality.

Upon our arrival, we waited a solid 10 minutes to be seated. This may not seem long, but let me reiterate - the restaurant was not bustling, and empty tables were in clear view. A hint of initial frustration settled in, but we decided to keep an open mind.

Deciding to take the initiative, we chose a table ourselves, only to be met with an unpleasant surprise. When we informed our waitress about our self-seating, she confronted us with an argumentative and rude demeanor. Instead of the expected apology for the extended wait or a friendly greeting, we were berated for sitting without her explicit permission - a first in my dining experiences.

This would have been enough to mar any restaurant visit, but considering I was hosting guests, it was an exceptionally uncomfortable situation. Had I been alone, I would have certainly taken the opportunity to address her unprofessional conduct.

However, it's not all shadows at Ethan. I will admit that the culinary offerings served as a glimmer of redemption. The dishes were generous in portion and, more often than not, a delight to the palate. But good food cannot make up for horrendous service, can it?

Therefore, I would urge potential diners to weigh the importance of service in their dining experience before deciding on Ethan. As it stands, I'm hard-pressed to give them even a single star based on the lackluster service, despite the quality of the meals. Their staff's attitude and hospitality require a significant overhaul, if not for the sake of future guests, then for their...

I recently visited this restaurant and unfortunately, I had an extremely unpleasant encounter with the staff. From the moment I entered, it was evident that the customer service was lacking. There was a particularly unpleasant and unprofessional employee who seemed to have a negative attitude towards customers. They spoke to us in a condescending manner, as if we were unworthy of their respect. To make matters worse, when our dishes were served, they were slammed onto the table, displaying a complete lack of courtesy and professionalism.

What shocked me the most was when the employee had the audacity to yell at me, demanding a higher tip. This kind of behavior is not only unprofessional but also offensive and inappropriate. It is not up to the staff to dictate the amount of gratuity one should provide.

Furthermore, when I tried to get their attention for a take-out box, they deliberately ignored me. It was as if I was invisible. Eventually, after what felt like an eternity, I managed to grab one of their attention, although it appeared that she had difficulty understanding both English and French.

To add insult to injury, the same rude employee shouted at me in a disrespectful manner, demanding to know what I needed and instructing me to pay at the counter. I had already paid for my meal and was simply waiting for the take-out box.

Overall, my experience at this restaurant was marred by the appalling behavior and rudeness of the staff. Their lack of professionalism and disrespect towards customers is completely unacceptable. I would strongly advise potential patrons to think twice before dining at this establishment. Absolutely horrid place, I hope the staff at the restaurant receive a slap on the hand from their management for their actions...

Tried this restaurant while walking in Chinatown as it looked busy inside. BIG MISTAKE not taking a look at reviews first to see the low ratings. We ordered the combo A for two and added 10 pieces of dumplings as it is very reasonably priced. The combo includes soup, chicken, fried rice, vegetables, egg roll. It was a red flag when the general tso's chicken came out 1 min after ordering - the chicken was luke warm so I think they have it pre made as its a popular dish part of many combos. For those who say this is authentic Chinese food, it is definitely not. It's westernized fast food Chinese that is average at best. We were brought vegetables and multiple servers were yelling beside our table and across the restaurant that they messed up our table number and brought us the wrong type of veggies (I understand Cantonese). One of the servers eventually took the vegetable dish away, however I told her I had eaten a piece of broccoli and she looked at me and acknowledged what I said... then she took the vegetables and gave it to the table right beside us! After that, I didn't have much of an appetite - this shows the class of service or care that the restaurant operates at. While paying the cashier was extremely snappy and rude to the gentleman ahead of us ordering for take out. I would not go back nor recommend this restaurant.

After a day of sightseeing, we were too tired to dine in any restaurant. All we wanted was back to the hotel ASAP, so we decided to get some takeout. Then we came across Restaurant Ethan (為食坊), an authentic Southern Chinese/Hong Kong restaurant. For us "old HK" (老香港), it's a no brainer. We can just enter and order right away without reading the menu. We had fried chicken with fries (炸雞薯條), shrimp toast (炸蝦多士) and hot milk tea (熱奶茶). The staff is very friendly and efficient. Our order was ready in about 10 minutes. The food was ok, pretty average, but probably just because we're from Toronto and too used to all the awesome HK cafe there. But for this price (total about $20) and the service, we're happy with our meal. We recommend Restaurant Ethan (為食坊) for anyone who wants to grab a quick bite while in Chinatown.
