So the atmosphere was nice and the staff was friendly, but the food left a lot to be desired. The main issue for me personally was that the rice on the Nigiri was cold and hard. It felt like the rice was stored in the fridge. Sushi rice should be room temperature. The vinegar on the rice was also a bit strong. The fish in general was standard. Cuts were adequate size, but some pieces were better than others obviously. The tuna and salmon cuts on the sashimi were also small. I would have also loved to have fresh grated wasabi over the powdered clump they served there. I’m always floored by how restaurants at this scale and price point serve the same wasabi as they do in to go sushi packages from the grocery store. Fresh wasabi will change the entire experience of a sushi restaurant and is an indication that they take their fish seriously. The Takoyaki was a bit dense and felt fried. Definitely wasn’t made on a takoyaki form as they do in Japan, which is fine. The Japanese crepe (pancake) was a bit dense, but the flavor was there. The biggest disappointment was the Brussels sprouts and eggplant. The Brussels sprouts were so small and the eggplant was very greasy. The amount of oil on the bottom of the bowl made it hard to eat. The dish just doesn’t work well in my opinion. The desert, which is the donuts comes with a bowl of condensed milk, which is very sweet. Wish it was more like a custard personally. The strawberries were also a bit too green and tart for me. Wish they were sweater. Overall, the entire experience was underwhelming for the price point. None of the food was terrible, minus the eggplant/Brussels sprouts dish, but wasn’t great. I feel that 3 stars is a bit generous and would have liked to leave 2.5 stars...
Read moreWithout a doubt, deserving of Best in TripAdvisor awards of the year. The food is amazing and the service is outstanding. The ambiance is warm and comfortable, and music is at the right volume, which is a perfect environment for lunch. Sadly, I did not have the opportunity to try the dinner menu, but lunch menus are impeccable. Price is reasonable for the quality and service. Would recommend for anyone at any time.
Part 2: Now, how can I possibly refuse such an invitation for dinner. Today, on April 22nd, I decided to drop by and request a dinner table. With great anticipation and empty belly, I browse through the menu, and with great surprise, i noticed my favorite appetizer is on the menu. Since this is my first dining experience, I ordered a salad entry with one serving of Takoyaki. As for my main, I request chefs' choice of 15 sushi and additional rolls for trying.
Not to my surprise, it was all I was hoping for. Great qualities sushi for its price. I have been to many sushi restaurants, most of them are quantity over quality, and some time it's not even worth eating. It's very rare to find such an amazing restaurant that respect it's ingredients and delivers it to your guests with care. Byian, our waiter, was exceptional helpful and always close by even during rush hour, providing me with great service.
I may have gone long enough. Needless to say, Kyo is now my top 5 favorite restaurants, and I would 100% come back.
P.S. Do keep in mind my follow University students, the restaurants is service great, amazing sushi that is equivalent to its pricing. It is not your everyday dinner or lunch place. It's more like your "I'll take you out on a date..." Kind of restaurants.
Thank you for your hospitality, and I will...
Read moreIt's... okay. Food tasted good but for a place where the waitress calls the menu a "tapas" menu, there's a lot of Asian dishes, not Spanish at all. The soya sauce is kept under lock and key (meaning the staff serves it to you in a teapot, and then walks away with the pot, never to return again). The portions are extremely small, I get it, it's the old port and it's touristy but when most Izakayas serve 6-8 Takoyakis, this place serves you 4, for the same price. The sashimi's where alright, cut thick but still, so small for the price -marginally bigger pieces than an all you can eat sushi joint. I would have definitely ordered more food had our server ever returned to check on us but after the food started coming out, we didn't see her again until she came to clear our plates. I would have ordered another drink too but I didn't get a chance. Oh, but my most serious criticism for the management, is that when we arrived, no one, and I mean NO one, made eye contact or came to greet us. The restaurant was not packed, I think I counted 4 tables and around 5-6 on the floor but I think we stood at the entrance over 5-7 mins while the staff continued about their day, talking amongst themselves, as if we were invisible, I've never seen that before. Maybe there was a power trip thing that happened here where a server got in trouble for trying to seat someone instead of the host/hostess but at least ask your staff to great customers, "hello someone will be right with you" instead of walking right past us and ignoring us. That was so uncomfortable for my date and I. Probably...
