I heard about this place from people I know and around town, figured I'd give it a shot.
Smoke's Poutinerie is located downtown and trying to find parking here is as expected, it sucks. Managed to find a place four blocks away from the restaurant and had to walk the rest of the way. But as expected just a small walk through downtown and I was bombarded with requests for money and cigarettes. Fun...
Once inside the restaurant my nostrils where filled with the delicious scents of the poutinerie. Walking up to the counter I was greeted by a nice lady and asked if she could take my order. Having never been there before I had no clue what I wanted to order; all I knew is that I was hungry AF and wanted a lot of food. The lady serving me patiently waited while I made my decision. I decided to go with the "Double Pork Poutine" which included fries, cheese, gravy, pulled pork and bacon. I also had the order "WoW" sized, which simply gives you more of whatever you ordered. Then finished the order off with a bottle of coke.
Waited about 10ish minutes before my food was ready. This ten minutes was however agonizing; constantly smelling the food being cooked made my mouth water. I ended up plunging my face into my phone in hope of ignoring my growing hunger... I didn't help. Eventually my number was called to get my food, I was ecstatic.
Like The Flash I was out of my seat and up to the counter faster then the human eye could see. I like to think that in my haste I said, "thank you" to the gentleman serving me but in reality it probably went something along the lines of, "Foooood!" as I grabbed the giant box of pure unadulterated deliciousness.
Sitting down I immediately grabbed my fork and began violently stabbing. Only realizing I may need to slow down after jamming piping hot poutine into my mouth. Consequences of doing this are exactly what you think, I ended up burning my mouth. Now that my brain had kicked back in and my stomach had taken a back seat I was able to take in what was boxed before me. The fries where fresh and hot, none too long nor too short. The gravy was hot and tasty with a tiny hint of sweet, possibly from the bacon that was already mixed in. The pulled pork was bountiful throughout the poutine and the cheese curds where also plentiful; nothing was skimped on. Like ebony and ivory on a piano, the meat, cheese, potatoes and gravy where in perfect harmony.
I finished my last fork full of pure ecstasy and polished off the last of my bubbly drink. My stomach guage now being set from "E" to "F", I sat back and took a long breath. Got out of my seat and cleaned everything up; the staff here had been VERY busy the entire time I was eating and I wasn't about the be "that guy" and leave my garbage for them to clean up. Grabbed my hoodie off my seat, zipped it up and headed out the door for a well...
Read moreI ordered from Smoke's last night through Skip the Dishes. I normally settle for a plain-tasting poutine - a traditional with only gravy and cheese - but yesterday I wanted to try something new, and chose the veggie rainbow poutine instead. I was a little skeptical to try it, thinking that cheese, sour cream, guacamole, and gravy didn't sound like ingredients that go together, but I was pleasantly surprised by the taste and how all of the components meshed. The guacamole had a hint of lime in it and tasted great. It was all-around a tasty poutine, and it will definitely be my new go-to when I order again. My boyfriend on the other hand is a big meat-eater and ordered the triple pork. He enjoyed his as well, and thought the portioning of the meat was quite generous and filling. On top of that, it only took Skip the Dishes under 12 minutes to deliver our order. Very fast service, and overall a pleasant, tasty experience from Smoke’s Poutinerie.
The only down-side is the price. Yes, the novelty aspect is exciting, and Smoke's has a lot of menu options and different ingredients to choose from, but paying almost $15 for a rather small portion of potatoes and gravy is a little absurd. I also find that the amount of cheese curds is almost non-existent, receiving only a few scraps throughout my entire poutine. Otherwise, it's a satisfying meal and you'll definitely have to try more than one menu item in order to get the...
Read moreWe came here because my wife is originally from Quebec and Poutine is life there. Now, just to explain, there were no other people in the establishment, so it wasn't busy
We ordered 2 traditional Poutines, a small popcorn chicken, a phily cheesecake sandwich and 2 drinks. Seemed pretty expensive at $72.
Once we got our Poutine, there were very few cheese curds on them at all. The popcorn chicken had no seasoning and were luke-warm. I ordered the Philly cheese steak @$10.99 for the sandwich. I ordered it without mushrooms as well. It came with mushrooms, and it was the worst excuse for a sandwich I think I have ever seen. It couldn't have been more than a 3 bite sandwich. (See pic).
Upon picking it up, I mentioned how small it was and that there is no way that is supposed to be the size for that money. The guy at the front smiled and said that's how they make it. I returned it because it was covered in mushrooms, when I clearly ordered without. I said I didn't want anything else, to just refund me for it and they wouldn't. They offered a poutine as replacement. (Why would I want another poutine when we had 2 already). Then they said they would make a different sandwich. Something with chicken. Not wanting to fight, I agreed.....my mistake I know.
We both left feeling cheated and we won't return. Place was dirty, windows were all greasy and the...
