Gary's Kitchen — Restaurant in Tofino

This is my happy place! I've been coming here for years (since 2006) and I have never had a bad experience. Never... not once.

I've gone here for lunch for years and seen some strange stuff go down with unruly customers. I don't think it is unreasonable for the staff to expect the customers dog to stay out side the restaurant. I don't think it is unreasonable for the staff to ask customers to stop yelling and fighting With patrons at another table. I don't think it is unreasonable for the staff to ask customers to stop throwing food. I don't think it is unreasonable for the staff to expect customers to pay their bills. If a customer is unsatisfied that their meal is not spicy enough they should not become aggressive, belligerent and demand the food go back into the kitchen to be tossed with chilli sauce. That can be done effectively at the table with the utensil provided...

Like I said, I've seen some stuff go down.

I grew up in Hong Kong and have been going to Chinese restaurants all over the world. Rapid and to the point communication is the norm. If you want some one to hold your hand and explain the ingredients in your meal, you have every other restaurant in town to go to... If you want your B1 combo or Wor Wonton in under 10min this is the spot. If u want to substitute chow-mien in place of chicken fried...

I’m not writing this review after having Gary’s. I’m writing this review after having Chinese food at a different establishment on Vancouver island.

We ordered the usual suspects from this other establishment; chicken chow mein, sweet and sour pork, fried rice. It was good, but that was it.. just good. It didn’t scratch the itch quite like a meal at Gary’s does. It made us realise how fortunate we are to have Gary’s literally steps from our front door.

There’s something about Gary’s that is special, nothing compares! It is our favourite restaurant in Tofino. We get the B1 C1 combos every time and it’s just as good - every time. The owner John takes off for a little over a month every year and we literally mark it down on our calendar. Opening day for Gary’s in January is like a second Christmas!!

Gary’s Kitchen in Tofino is the best Chinese Food in Tofino! Coming from Vancouver I had high expectations for Chinese food, and to be honest the first time I had ordered a Chow Mein, it wasn’t the greatest. I had talked to my neighbours and they suggested the sweet and sour pork, salty fried tofu, and also the combos. Combo C , B, C1 and D1. SO GOOD! Prices are reasonable for Tofino. You have to try the lemon chicken too!! Good batter and nice chunks of actual chicken breast, there is no “bubble chicken” used which is great because I’m super picky with strange meats. Also...many many friends have recommended the burgers and sandwiches which I have yet to try, but will. Gary’s is fantastic for takeout, always 10-15 minutes and it’s ready. And John...
