My friend wanted to come here despite being pretty far from us, but I agreed to come with her and my other friend to try the place out. First off, as soon as you enter you'll realize the atmosphere is different. It looks nice, modern, and fancy. You'll also notice that the type of people that eat here are very classy.
Now the first time I looked at the menu, I thought that the prices were to be expected based off the atmosphere. My friends were significantly surprised that they had to pay $10 for 5 dumplings the size of an acorn. I reassured them that it's most likely taste over quantity. We ordered one of each of their dumplings.
The kobe beef dumplings were disappointing. I guess it was a long shot to expect the beef to taste like the Kobe beef I had when I was in Kobe, Japan, but I expected it to at least taste a little less bland. The skin was delicious though, and I do believe when they say they make them in-house.
The veg dumplings were overpowered by strong flavours, which overshadowed the delicious texture and taste of the skins. Perhaps if the filling was chopped a little more fine it may solve the imbalance.
The Veal and ginger dumplings were the better of the three. The flavours were balanced, though had an unusual tartness to them. The skin was still good, and the Ponzu sauce was average.
The service is a whole different case. The hostess sat us down to order and told us the waitress would arrive shortly to take our order, bringing hot towels and mini appetizers. Then she went to stand by the counter leaning against it, looking bored. We looked through the menu, and the waitress still had not arrived but I had some questions. I waived over the hostess, seeing that nobody else was there, and inquired about the menu. She put on a really bad fake smile (cuz as soon as she was done talking it dropped) and said she was new and knew nothing about the food, telling us to wait for the waitress. She went back to her spot leaning against the counter. Finally the poor waitress arrived at our table flustered but ready to take our order. We asked our questions and she answered to the best of her ability.
After eating, I was disappointed(as you can tell by my food review). I wanted to get the bill so we could leave. I waved over the hostess, but she looked at me, then looked away. I said a light 'excuse me', but she still continued to ignore me. Finally, I got fed up and went up to the counter with my own fake smile. As I made my way up, I heard her say to one of the other waitresses that was doing something on the POS system that the veal they served 'was actually bad', but immediately quieted as I approached. I was fearful hearing this, because our table was the only one that ordered dumplings; being the observant type, I had been scanning the small space to see what other people ordered. Did she mean bad as in taste bad, or bad as in the ingredients went bad? I wasn't sure at the time, but I did have an upset stomach later that night.
At the counter, I tried to ask for the bill but before I could even finish my sentence she cut me off and told me the bill would be brought to my table and I should sit back down. A little aghast at her attitude, I went to sit back down and waited for the bill.
Overall, I was very unhappy with my experience. I'll admit that my party was diverse, and perhaps it was discriminatory values that made our experience different. Despite our outward appearances, we still acted with respect however, so I cannot comprehend why we were treated in such a manner.
I think it is only the service that was sub-par, hence the extra star. If they improved service, I would say, that paired with their food, it would at least put them a little bit higher on the...
Read moreFelt like some crispy tempura chicken to take out last night so went to Edo on Spadina. There were three staff - one young woman, one a bit older and a man. I ordered from the young woman and as I was doing so a customer came in and said she was very annoyed that she was ordering things and getting home only to find that the order was switched or not fulfilled. I should have listened - I ordered the tempura chicken for $16 and was told I would get 5 pieces- I assumed fairly large for this price and I specifically said NO TEMPURA SAUCE and that I wanted the daikon that came with it. Came back and said once again that the order was to have NO TEMPURA sauce. The man walked out from the kitchen with a plastic bag tat was tightly tied. When I got home, I cut open the bag only to find tempura sauce ,no daikon and five soggy thin pieces of tempura. In fact, there was a smudge of a white blob under the sauce that looked horrible and tasted of ginger and horseradish. I called and got the man and told him that I was very annoyed that I asked for daikon and received the sauce instead for a very small portion of cold greasy tempura. He said "oh well, I am sorry". I said that I was going to post it and he said "go ahead' so I am. I have eaten here about three times over the past few years and was pleased enough but now, never to return. WARNING - if doing takeout, tell them you have your own bag and to just bring food out in box, look it over carefully and if it not what you want, do not pay for it. For some reason I cannot post the photo of the five tempura which looked exactly like chicken tenders from Kentucky Fried Chicken- do you think this was worth $18...
Read moreBeen going to Edo for 20 years. At one time they were one of the few places for great sushi, but lots of other high end places opened around midtown (Yasu, Skippa, Shinoku, Shousin etc.) leaving Edo in the dust...and they’ve downsized to EDO-ko. The food is now squarely mid range, as personified by sushi pizzas, poke bowls and the ‘fish’d’ brand. It’s ok, just not great. The bigger problem at the moment is delivery; came to a head (after 3 other 90 min plus/missing parts experiences) on Valentines. You order days in advance. You confirm a delivery window. It’s a set fixed menu with the food prepared hours in advance...and it’s still an hour late and super cold (obviously had been in fridge). They still couldn’t execute. That’s it for me. Done.
Thanks at least for replying. However, you know that a bento box is not supposed to be ice cold and that sushi (rice) should not be refrigerated. Room temperature. Rice directly from cooker. Make it fresh. The donburi box had an undercooked egg partly congealed in cold rice; yes, this should be at least warm. Please don’t pretend that this meal was supposed to be served from a refrigerator; your customers (at least those who know sushi) know, and you’re not running a supermarket counter.
Update, July 2024. Shame on me for trying them again. Paid $170 for an Uber Food order at 7:30. It’s now 9:00pm, and still no food. If you’re busy, turn off delivery services and/or update time to deliver (was 8:40 delivery ‘latest’). Is...
