My son was taking a train from Hamilton to join me for dinner so i looked for a place near Union Station. i had dined at the Miller Tavern on Yonge street some years before and remembered it as being pretty good. the issues began when i ordered a double scotch and the bar tender presented me with what could only be described as a poor single. he explained that this was the restaurants double and apologized but couldn't do anything. $20 for the "double" I ordered a glass of wine thereafter. my son and I both ordered Shrimp cocktail which the waiter raved about. three very tough shrimp in a gooey weird cocktail sauce arrived. i'm not sure what was in the sauce but it wasn't very good and as said, the shrimp were very tough. the charge was $39 each. hardly a bargain for what was received. we also ordered sirloin steaks at $65 each. believe me this steak was no where near the Harbour 60 prices charged, but at least was cooked properly for the thin piece of meat. my son ordered the fries which he liked despite there being an overwhelming truffle oil flavour to them. i ordered a baked potato, which i expected to come with the toppings on the side. the potato was presented, fully dressed. i really do not like the taste f sour cream and asked if they could prepare me one with just butter and perhaps some bacon if they had it. the wait staff agreed, but it took almost 30 minutes for the new potato to arrive. the steak had been consumed by then and the replacement potato was so over cooked, i could not break the skin with a steak knife. the bacon pieces were also way overdone and smothered the potato. i showed the waiter the result and he apologized and took it away. when they presented me with the bill, they had removed a glass of wine and the second beer for my son, but the charge still came to $300 without the tip. hardly worth the terrible meal. the bartender and waitstaff were good. the restaurant was hardly busy at all. i tipped 18% despite the terrible food since it wasn't their fault. i will not return to either location in the future. what a...
Read moreLast night may have been one of the worst restaurant experience I have ever had in Toronto. This is the first time I am writing a negative review for Miller Tavern and will certainly be the last time I go back or recommend it to my colleagues or friends again. The night started off with an extremely rude bartender, I believe his name is Matt, who refused to serve us (a large group of 13 people) while we waited for our table to get ready. I understand that it can be a bit challenging to transfer bills over to another server, but most restaurants do this happily, or at the worst just ask you to pay upfront. Another colleague asked to see a list of their available ryes for a whiskey on the rocks and was told to “just look at the shelf” even though there were several dozens options to chose from. It was an uncomfortable and unpleasant way to begin the night. When the table became ready for us, we were seated and served by a fellow named Angelo. Angelo was even worse than the bartender. His demeanor the entire time made us feel like we were a burden to him and it seemed like he made every effort to make our experience as bad as it possibly could be. He was rude, dismissive, and preferred just telling us that they were out of every wine instead of kindly telling us what was actually available. I found it really convenient that the only bottles in stock were $80 or $155 and I suspect he just wanted to get the most out of us for his personal gain. The worst part was how he handled the payment, making it VERY clear that gratuity was not included while he watched like a hawk as we paid for the bill. This man was probably the worst server I have ever had and, frankly, I was embarrassed to have suggested this restaurant to our out of town colleagues. I can assure you that it will never happen again. It is unfortunate that this restaurant has gone down hill this much. I hope that management is able to rectify their issues and turn...
Read moreThis was a special occasion. My in-laws were visiting for the first time from Australia, going to their first baseball game. I recommended Miller Tavern because my husband and I had an excellent experience at the other location. We let them know upon arrival we were in a bit of a rush (1hr to eat), and requested a nice table when I made the booking. The notes were not read.
We were sat somewhere around the back, next to a loud table, and not visible to anyone else. No server came by to greet, to offer water, nothing. We eventually flagged down a manager delivering drinks to another table. He barely said a word before getting us waters, realizing no one was looking after us. He seemed frazzled, the environment was the staff were drowning. Our view was there were only 2 other tables visible, and a function of sorts that had already finished. I let him know we'd let the host know we were a bit in a rush as we were going to the game. He quickly put me in my place and said "well so is everyone else in here...". Clearly I'm not your VIP, but it's not necessary to say that. It'd be sufficient to say "we'll do our best, sorry no one's been by, we're a little backed up tonight". Drinks took a while - we only ordered one round, no cocktails. Food was tasty. We never found out who our server was and couldn't find one when we needed one because the section we were in was out of sight. The bussers we flagged down helped us the most. To get us what we were missing and to get us our bill. I felt pretty embarrassed that this was a place I recommended to my in-laws who probably thought 'gee. This is the best toronto has to offer? Awkward'.
I hope to go back to the other location some day. We had a great experience there, the staff were friendly, knowledgeable, dressed professionally and acted accordingly too. Or maybe we got...
