New York Fries Dufferin Mall — Restaurant in Toronto

This evening my husband and I decided to make a trip the Dufferin Mall location to grab a poutine. We walked up around 7:55 (this location closes at 9:00 pm.) - we walked up to the counter we waited while we watched a young man sit on a crate on his phone. My husband interrupted him to take our order. We asked to order a Large Poutine. At this time he advised us we could only an order a small or medium - so we ordered a medium. While he was cooking the fries I noticed a large fry container - I asked him if we could please have a large. He then advised me that they do not sell large fries at this time at night. This seemed a bit odd - so I asked if there was someone else I could speak with. He went into the back to discuss it with someone and then another team member appeared. He reiterated they do not serve large fries this late because they take 45 minutes to cook and they are closing in an hour. My husband asked what would happen if we ordered 2 medium poutines - the gentleman said we could do that. Now on a logical level this doesn't make much senses as a large poutine is 744g but 2 medium poutines would be 1,130g. I asked him his name and he told me it was Nelson Mandela. I told him probably not the best thing to do and asked for a refund. He advised he would be calling security because he felt threatened. I asked him to refund us and we would leave. They refunded us with cash even though we paid by credit card.

Honestly a disappointing experience where it appears a company wanted us to purchase 2 items vs 1 item and then have someone have a blatant disregard.

By far one of the worst New York fries restaurants I have ever been to. We ordered a medium works and the fries were burnt, I went back to the counter and asked if they can remake it and even asked for a smaller size and the older lady that works there was so angry and rude as if the fries were coming from her own pocket. Slamming things, making the food as if she was so upset with me for asking to remake the burnt works fries.

I asked to speak to the manager and the manager allowed that behaviour to continue until I asked for my money back which she didn’t oblige to but instead forced me to take the small order of the works. I have been a manager for over 20 years and would never let my staff treat a customer the way the older miserable lady did.

New York Fries is hands down one of the best quick-stop spots I’ve been to. You can immediately tell it’s a family-owned business—there’s a warmth and pride in everything they do. The staff is incredibly friendly and welcoming, which makes a big difference when you're grabbing a bite on the go.
