It is a beautiful restaurant in downtown Toronto, beautiful atmosphere , great and welcoming crew and nice music. It is a beautiful experience to live but I felt like beyond that I wouldn't go back for a while. Maybe if some of my friends or family want to experience something different I would take them there. We sat in the sultans tent section where the belly dancing show is. The set menu was either an entrée and an appetizer for 65 dollars per person , or add a desert for 75 dollars. But you can substitute the desert for an appetizer or vice versa. At first you would think that it would be a bit steep, but take into consideration the charge for the show. As I said the staff were very welcoming, our table attendant was very curtious and his recommendations were spot on. The food appetizer were roughly a 4 over 5 but that's pushing it. I ordered the maftoul which is minced meat in phylo pastry and it came with a mayo chipotle sauce which is weird since it is a maroccan restaurant , pomegranate molasses would have made it a 5 out of 5. Also the zaalouk eggplant which is eggplants minced with green pepper and onions and tomatoes I think, seasoned with lots of cumin. I loved it but I would recommend you add some more olive oil on top. My wife had the coconut shrimps and they were good. Then we ordered the entrée which were lamb tajin with couscous and that was a very very nice dish. I eat alot of couscous and that was right there at the top. My wife ordered the beef kebab and here where the issue lies. Both our entrées took 40 minutes to get there. By the time they arrived we had already lost most of out appetite so the kebab is still in the fridge 🤣.(i am writing the review the second day). I also ordered a maroccan coffee which is a warm alcoholic coffee with spices and I loved it. I couldn't use a 3.5 stars rating for service but that's what it was. First for the very late order specially because the attendants passed by our table and saw it with empty appetizer plates and didn'tcome and tell us the order was delayed or anything. Second the hostess was somewhat nonchalante. We told her the order was very late and she was like ok. Then I told her on the way out that the order was very late and we took it home instead of eating it cold, she was like I hope you enjoy them tomorrow at home. No apology or anything in both times. I mentioned it twice and she didnt even blink. Also it was my wedding anniversary , I've been to other restaurants before and I would get a small gesture or something like a congratulations small cake or cupcake or some kind of special setup on the table , but nothing. I dont give it much importance but it would have been nice. The dancing show was beautiful ,it is nice also that they invite people to join the dancing and give them certificates of accomplishments 😅 however alot of times the dancers were way far from us we couldn't see especially that the decor is pillars and curtains. I think there were supposed to be 3 dancers but yesterday there were 2. It was a beautiful atmosphere, beautiful experience , the dances and dancers were beautiful , the greeting was great, but the running service should improve, and the sauces in the food were way off. The kebab came with mayo Chipotle sauce and Tahini, that could have been changed to hummus dip for example it would have made it at homerun. As I said I would take my friend's and family new in town for the experience, but since I am familiar with the cuisine, they would be disappointed by the service and some...
Read moreMy husband and I are always look forward to enjoying new and unique dining experiences and the Sultan’s Tent was definitely a Moroccan delight. This hidden gem is located across the Flat Iron Building, just a stone throw from the St. Lawrence Market. Once we stepped in through the glass doors off Front Street we felt like we were transported to a cafe in North Africa. The dining lounge and bar had stunning, authentic, gilded doors, artwork and decor. We later learned from the owner that many items came imported directly from Morocco in 8 huge shipping containers.
As we entered the dining area, we were seated in a cozy, fabric enclosed tent, each tent structure accommodating four tables. I recommend sitting in a corner table against the exterior walls to have an optimal view of the restaurant and to take advantage of the comfy bench seating adorned with cushions.
We brought our 10 year old son for the experience and they had a children’s menu; they even customized his meal for his gluten sensitivity. We had a fixed price menu with a choice of many items, we started with the savory Maftoul Moroccan “cigar” stuffed with ground beef, raisins and cashews drizzled with a mildly spicy sauce. Our mains were the beef brisket and chicken fez, both served in tagines for an authentic touch. For our dessert we had crème brule, which was excellent and a sweet couscous called Keskesu . It was wonderful to be able to enjoy the distinctive cuisine while seated in such a beautiful setting. We appreciated that the staff were very discrete and respectful, they never interrupted us or made us feel rushed making it a very conducive to conversations, perfect for a date night or a couple’s night out with friends.
Then to complete the experience, we were entertained with a 30 minute belly dance show that was fun and interactive; we all enjoyed it. We got an added bonus as we were able to take a sneak peak at the private, special event space downstairs. It was amazing and a must see if you get a chance with its carved ceiling, massive gilded metal doors and beautifully decorated private lounge areas. It looked right out of a movie scene, the perfect place for a themed event. The Sultan’s Tent & Cafe Moroc truly has a unique charm that has to be experienced to be appreciated and would definitely...
Read moreOn the 7th of February, I made reservations for the 14th of Feb. for a table for 2 in the back section of the restaurant, knowing the difference between the 2 sections available. I received a confirmation email, including the price for the section i had reserved. On the 9th of February I get a call from the restaurant explaining that i needed to be at the restaurant on time (6:45pm) and that I needed to leave by 9pm, I obviously accepted, and the restaurant rep continued to stress the importance of us leaving by 9pm, which was by itself extremely unnecessary and rude. She proceeded to request my credit card details and I explained that I had my hands full at the mall, and would call back in a few minutes. 30 min later, i give the restaurant a call back, and was informed that my reservation was in fact for the front section which was not what i reserved, knowing well that the front section was cheaper than the back section, a completely different seating experience. She said she didn't see it on her end and that it was fully booked anyway, even though I had a confirmation email. I am extremely disappointed, I had initially met the owner/chef in Calgary over 20 years ago who I found to be an extremely talented and welcoming individual, not to mention very kind, and I had been a regular at that Calgary location. I am sad to see that the same treatment of customers is not upheld. My wife and I just welcomed our first baby 2 months ago and thus would have been our first proper outing. Obviously not having the table I booked is upsetting but the way the rep handled the situation was very unprofessional and not on par with the level of service associated with a restaurant of...
