Sushi Mugen is a new Japanese restaurant located on downtown Davie Street Vancouver. Since it’s brand new, it has attracted many customers’ attention. My fiance and I went to Sushi Mugen to have a try last month. We had such great experience dining out there.

Environment: The location of Sushi Mugen is on one of the busiest streets, Davie St..The restaurant has two floors. Its interior is modern and minimalist, with a theme of embracing nature. Actually, the restaurant is quite of medium size. It can fit approximately 30 people on the upper floor. It’s perfect for the medium size event. The ground floor has an open kitchen and can fit 5 to 6 groups of people.

Service: It was our first time having food at Sushi. The servers are very nice, friendly, and helpful. Once we got to the restaurant, the server bought us the water to drink and menu to view. At the same time, the server provided helpful suggestions for us to order. The menu of this helpful too. Each selection comes with the color image, which is easier for all customers.

Food: The food on the menu are all Japanese dishes with high-quality presentation image and reasonable price. We have ordered some basic one and some fancy one to share. We had Goma-ae $4.95, Takoyaki $5.95, Awesome Yam Roll $12.50, Mugen Tower Sashimi $15.95, Crazy Boy Roll $7.95. All the food came out of the kitchen fast, well cooked. The taste of the food was a super delicious and large portion, which is very worth the price.

Goma-ae $4.95

Spinach with sesame sauce

Takoyaki $5.95

6pc, Fried & baked octopus

Awesome Yam Roll $12.50

8pc/ Crab Meat, avocado, cucumber, baked salmon, yam fries, unagi sauce, spicy mayo.

Mugen Tower Sashimi $15.95

Fresh salmon and tuna tartar, avocado, crab mix, shitake, tobiko, deep-fried garlic, caper, yuzu mayo, basil pesto, balsamic sauce

Crazy Boy Roll $7.95

6pc/Deep-fried California roll, potato chips, unagi, and spicy sauce

Final Thoughts: We had a great experience dining out at Sushi Mugen. Highly recommend this place to everyone! Wish to go back to try different food on the menu at...

The first time I visited was a few months ago and I had their sashimi lunch box which was tasty and a very good deal.

My second visit I went during weekday lunch hour, so understandably a peak time. There were only a few other dine-in patrons but there were multiple takeout orders being processed it seemed. Regardless, my food took about 30 mins to be ready after ordering which felt too long. I ended up having to change my orders to to-go instead since I couldn't stay long enough to enjoy my meal. The staff apologized for the delay but before I changed my order, no one acknowledged the delay which would have been appreciated.

Sadly on my third and last visit, I got the house roll and chopped scallop roll and both were very flavourless. The rice seemed totally plain for both (like no vinegar or anything), which couldn't even be improved with adding extra soy sauce. The scallops were also plain in flavour. House roll filling was okay, except the two end pieces didn't even contain any of the avocado.

But most importantly during this 3rd visit, there was only one server who was very busy and didn't seem to have the capacity to have a friendly attitude. Even when a second server came on shortly after my arrival, it was hard to get their attention to even order. And when my order was taken and given to me, I just didn't get a friendly vibe.

Maybe have enough staff so people can be served in an appropriate manner or have staff that can still communicate well with customers when they are busy? Not inclined to return...

Sushi Mugen is an absolute gem in the world of culinary delights! From the very first bite, I was transported to a realm of exquisite flavors and culinary perfection. The miso soup was the epitome of comfort, warming my taste buds and setting the tone for an unforgettable meal.

The Tuna Tataki was a burst of freshness, the succulent slices melting in my mouth. The Salmon Sashimi was a work of art, delicate and incredibly flavorful. The Ebi Sunomono Salad was a refreshing surprise, combining the sweetness of shrimp with the tanginess of the dressing.

The Avocado Roll was a true testament to simplicity done right, while the Scallop Hand Rolls showcased the harmony of flavors and textures that Sushi Mugen masters effortlessly. The Gomae Roll and Chicken Kara-age were delightful additions, each a symphony of taste.

The Sashimi Bento Box with Chicken was a complete meal in itself, with a perfect balance of proteins and sides. However, the standout star for me was undoubtedly the Chopped Scallop Roll. It was a masterpiece on a plate, with the light creaminess of the chopped scallops intertwining perfectly with the scallions, creating a flavor explosion that danced on my palate.

The portions were generous and offered incredible value for the quality and variety of dishes. The service was impeccable, and the ambiance added to the overall wonderful experience. Sushi Mugen has set a new standard for excellence in sushi dining, and I can't wait to return for more...

COVID protocol: There was about 12 inches of space between myself and the person sitting behind me. We did not feel safe. Two servers delivered food to the tables, picked up dishes, packaged open take out boxes, touched the VISA payment machines, open doors all without sanitizing their hands during the entire 1 hr and 20 minutes we were there. Visa machines were not sanitized after each use. The servers did not sanitize their hands after wiping tables. Food: We arrived when the downstairs space was half full and the upstairs were not yet open. We waited 1/2 for our lunch boxes. Most of the items in the lunch box were lukewarm, only the tempura items were hot. Although the volume of food looked impressive, they were mostly messy piles. In fact, a couple who took a long time deliberating their order sent a dish back because of presentation – apparently, the mess on the plate did not look like the picture. Our avocado and dynamite rolls did not keep together as they were gigantic. We got a prawn tempura with our Vegetable Lunch Box. Our tempuras were gigantic and quite greasy, with regular batter, not the delicate tempura batter. Some beef teriyaki pieces were not sliced paper thin and were extremely chewy and impossible to swallow. We did not finish our food and I ended up with indigestion. Two servers did a gallant job servicing two floors. It is possible because the kitchen output was slow.
