Every Inch HumanEvery Inch Human
We visited Wah Lai Yuen last Sunday to welcome back a friend who just returned to Victoria after a few months away — and she brought us to this cozy Chinese spot in Chinatown. It’s a bakery and restaurant in one, and the food really hit the spot! We ordered the seafood chow mein, wonton soup (my fave!), and the BBQ pork and duck. Everything came out fresh, hot, and flavorful. The chow mein was perfectly crispy on the edges and packed with seafood. The wonton soup was simple and comforting — the broth was rich, and the dumplings were soft and tasty. The BBQ meats were savory, tender, and just what you’d hope for from a Chinatown classic. My friend mentioned they’re especially known for their pork buns, which are usually best when they’re fresh out of the oven in the morning — but they tend to sell out early. Now I definitely want to come back to try those next time! Overall, the place has that old-school charm, the service was quick, and the prices were very reasonable. A great hidden gem in Victoria if you’re craving authentic Chinese food.

Great place in Chinatown. The gentleman cutting all the fresh BBQ meats seems like he's running the show. We had our last meal in Victoria here and it hit the spot. I would say the highlights are the bbq meats and duck. I huge plate of duck and roasted pork with some broccoli was fabulous and just under $15 was great value. Portions are huge here....I had the rice noodle in Soup with dumpling and soy chicken....I wasn't a huge fan. Again the bowl was huge, but I thought broth was lacking in flavor and the dumplings were a little weak...no flavor. Also lettuce in my not my favourite vege in soup. The buns are awesome ...fresh fresh fresh.. curry beef, pork buns, and omggggg the cheesy scallion bun to die for. Tip....line up outside on the right is for the buns and BBQ meats. Line up on the left is for dining in. If you are dining in wait outside on the left part of the line or else the meat cutting gentleman yells at u to wait outside lol. And the zodiac placemats were awesome my kids loved reading about each others traits. Enjoy!

From the outside the place looks questionable but then you get to the front window and your next question is……. Can I have some of that…… and by that I means the crispy, glistening, succulent on display peeking duck or crispy pork Hanging in the window. Then you go inside to see this awkwardly laid out entrance. Beyond that is a bakery display case with the most beautiful looking honey buns and coconut cream buns. The service is very good. Informative and they are quick to attend. The whole time waves of people line up to order their bakery goods. I highly recommend anyone who dares to venture into the places which look not too good from the outside, that you visit here. Kevin is amazing and so is his team. I met a lady who was buying a box of baked goods and some of the barbecued. She’s been coming since she was a kid in 1980 when her and her parents immigrated into Canada from the Caribbean. Try them out. You will love it.

Ok. So my fiance and I(African american male) were excited to order some pork buns here. We walked in the door where there was no one in line. The cashier asks if we are doing dine in or take out to which we respond take out. He sternly says wait outside. Instantly we are confused as there is noone in else in line but we just say ok and walk back out hoping to be called in at some point. We see an African American couple standing in the pick up line outside who tells us that we should walk in and place our order like they did. So we tell them thats what we were trying to do but were told to come outside. They are also confused so then a non African American couple walks in to the cashier and orders from the bakery, which is what we were trying to do. The cashier starts putting their order together and I point this out to the couple next to me and they are bewildered. So I walk in to get in line because they are almost done ordering. I was instantly met with aggression. Asking me what I want and that I should go back outside. At this point the disrespect is blatant but im trying to maintain composure. So I walk back out and when the couple inside walks out they say good luck ordering as they also noticed the disrespect. The African american couple hears this and says what is going on with this guy? 5 minutes later as I was about to just leave he calls us in. We walk in. He says what do you want? I order our pork buns and honey coconut bun pay and he says sternly by. After walking out we see the couple which ordered before us which says hey what was that guys problem? After a brief conversation we leave.

As if that experience was not enough, When we got back home and opened our box, the honey coconut bun that we ordered was nowhere to be found. At this point I am furious, so I look at the reviews of the restaurant and there does seem to be a theme of disrespect and prejudice at this restaurant.

Save yourself some time do not eat here. This was a very unnecessary, disrespectful, terrible experience and I will never go back. I am regretting not just walking away before ordering my food as it was stale, cold, they didn't even get the simple...

I bought $30 worth of duck and crispy pork yesterday. Today, I went back to get more chili sauce (the ones in single use blister packs). Upon letting the same lady that sold me the meats the day prior know that I wanted more chili sauce for the food I bought yesterday, she makes a semi dis grunted face. Her colleague tells her in Cantonese to just give it to me, and she does, still with that face. I told her that if she is uncomfortable giving me the chili sauce (she handed over two), that she can keep it, that it is ok by me. She then tells me that I bought the food yesterday. I told her that is correct (I had already verbally said it to her from the start), and ask her again, if she doesn't want to give it to me that it would be ok. Her male colleague again tells her in Cantonese to give it to me. I informed that lady that if she feels so uncomfortable to give it to me, that maybe she can just sell it to me, I can afford to buy it. Making a paying customer that regularly goes there to buy their ducks and pastry (I went there 3 times in the last 10 days) feel uncomfortable is very poor customer service. I am not begging, demanding, or stealing, but somehow made to feel bad for asking for chili sauce from the one use packets. How much does it really cost you? I even offered to pay for it, seeing that disgruntled face from your employee. Alas, I can only write this review, and as well, I shall not go back there again. Oh, one last thing, I read that sign on your counter asking that customers pay by direct debit instead of credit due to rising fees. I did that every time I go to this shop. I feel like I have to ask and prod as to how I can be a better customer, this is not how a customer should feel. I will vote with my feet and...

The table service is always get in and get ASAP vibe, which makes for a very uncomfortable seating with your partner and or friends. I got come bbq pork which was good just lots of burnt ends, (but I tend to enjoy that part). My fiance wanted a portion of rice for her veggie meal she has pre planned (because vegetarian obviously) come to get home and the rice is frozen solid which was not advertised before the server closing our to go bag. So once we got home and realized we did understand that things happen, and so we called back to the restaurant and asked how long to cook said frozen rice for and was immediately met with a rude tone of voice and on hold for over two minutes, the instructions I was given was ten to fifteen minutes in a microwave. After 11 minutes I took it out and it was rock hard on every corner...not to mention they have put duck inside of the frozen rice which was wrapped in a banana leaf so my fiance being vegetarian just had veggies this afternoon for lunch . Long story short this could have been avoided completely with a proper sign that had at least the smallest amount of information like telling you the rice is completely frozen solid, and has the trimmings of duck or what looks like poor...
