Edit: They have such a wonderful team, who reached out after my review and we had a chat and that has happened after a long time to me in Winnipeg. Giving them the missing star at the moment just for that...pat your backs the backs of your colleagues. Whenever I happen to be next the stars will illuminate so accordingly.
Tw: you will find egg puns in this review and read it at your own discretion. Omelete you know early on so you dont go beat me up.
It's a great addition to winnipeg food culture and the main street stretch.
Ambience: It's a really nice and cozy setup with an open kitchen with a bar seating space overlooking the dining area partitioned so that the whole place is well lit. Like most places that are eggsclusivley breakfast they have gone with the white and yellow. Music is soft, smells really nice, some spots are a little cramped to be seated at yet not uncomfortable. Their "patio" is more like "alley" by their store on the inside because i suppose earls and the 300 management have been difficult with them for them to get the empty space outside their store and citing some stupid winnipeg by-laws as it so often happens.
Staff: They are all young, cheerful, eggsception and hardworking bunch of individuals. The manager eggsactly knows what they are doing and it is managed well, the kitchen also seems to run well and smoothly they have had a good crack at it. The time from ordering to receiving the food and follow-ups + time in between and giving us breathing room etc. was really good.
Food: For the price their Alberta comrades do a better job at making it taste good. The presentation was fabulous and so were the portion sizes. The food in general was fresh and nice it had flavour, but it did lack that extra punch you hope you will get at places like these when you end up paying a hefty good amount per meal. To put it simply, it lacked anything memorable- I can't remember any item that stood out in the food I had here. Just for eg. hollandaise and bacon at clementines or juneberry, one block down at Local their bean burger and birria pinche tacos and mimosas were standing out I remember them. I am sure they will always do things to improve and may be next time I can ask to adjust some things. Having said that the food was sufficient and more.
edit: Their pancakes were nice and probably one of the most memorable for us. It was nice and fluffy and right balance of sweet and salty.
Overall you will have a good time here and fill your belly.
All in all its a great place to go visit or take folks visiting. Make sure you make a reservation...
Read moreThis morning my husband and I enjoyed the best breakfast of our adult lives :) !!! Food 11/10!! Service 11/10!!! Atmosphere 11/10!!!!
I know it may sound superfluous, but OEB has perfected satiating, delctable, gourmet breakfast/brunch. We sat next to the windows overlooking Main Street with sunny views of the downtown architecture. So fresh and bright .
Right away our server Beta brought us Umbria Coffee ( top notch fresh ground, and served in large mugs.... note the decaf is also fresh ground Umbria from the same roastery in Vancouver as the caffeinated....best restaurant decaf I have had, Usually you get sub par when you ask for decaf, but not at OEB.
Our server Beta was perfection, bright and friendly, offering knowledgable recommends on the menu ( she has personally tried every dish) She intuitively seemed to know when our water of coffee was needing a top up and was readily available. Your coffee will not run dry, but I never felt hovered over . The service struck the perfect balance of readily available and appropriately subtle If only every restaurant I frequent could replicate this level of hospitality. Thank you Beta!!!! And well done Manager/ owner Nate, who made his rounds to the tables, checking on the service, and graciously keeping his staff cheerful and efficient.
Now on to the best part of the morning.....the food!!!!! I am a huge brunch fan, and I adore when I can taste house-made elements from talented chefs. I had the Florentine Benny - perfect poached egg nestled in an avacado half topping a house made croissant smeared with tomato jam and earthy seared spinach..... truely umami , buttery, silky egg, rich bright tomato... Every bite was perfection.
My husband had the double trouble - one of the "not-so-tini crustini " an open face sandwich of sorts with layers of yumminess. Savoury bacon topped with excellent over-easy eggs, peppery arugula, nutty manchego cheese and chipotle aoli . Hearty , yet fresh. He loved it .
Our friends had the made-in-house Perogies and duck confit., decadent and delicious.... adding a 1/4 ounce spoon of Sturgeon caviar, which came topped by a delicate edible flower. đWe spread the caviar on a house made croissant and I was converted to the roe club.
We have already marked our calendar for our next visit into the city, and as we live an hour away, we believe it worth the trip. Highly Highly...
Read moreStopped by on a whim after the gym with my brother in tow. I took a chance as a walk-up and asked if there was seating available, (not having looked at the menu. Gotta try new things in life sometimes amiright?!). As luck would have it we were able to get in. So here it goesâŠ
The dining experience was very enjoyable. It was a fine balance between attentiveness, professionalism, menu knowledge and subtle attention to the dinerâs needs (water refills, table clearing, checking in).
Our server, having tasted the entire menu, was very confident and knowledgeable of each dish. I ordered the âThe One That Did Not Get Awayâ(salmon benny) + a chai latte while my brother went with âThe Notorious B.I.T (angus chuck burger).
From the first to the last bite, it was delicious. Very fresh ingredients, flavourful seasoning, cooked well and perfect portion sizing. I also loved the dish ware used. Just adds that extra detail to the dining experience.
Our seating was against the floor-to-ceiling windows. The breakfast theme decor was understated, yet modern. The ambiance was lovely. You could sit at a table or have a seat at the bar depending on your party size.
It was the right choice to take a chance and stop by. We also appreciated the front-end manager/owner thanking us for our patronage. Excellent service, friendly staff and a lovely dining experience. I hope to bring my friends and extended family here in the near future. Thank you OBE...
