La cocina criolla — Restaurant in Puerto Natales

We arrived in Puerto Natales mid-afternoon and, like many people reading this, checked Google to find a popular restaurant and found La Cocina Criolla with a 4.9 rating. As soon as we stepped inside, we felt warm, both from the heater and from the friendly waiter, Elias. I ordered a sandwich and my wife has the seafood soup. My sandwich was OK but my wife’s seafood soup was delicious. The next day we were doing the full day tour to the base of the towers and we checked with Elias at which time they stop serving food. He told us 10.30pm. We did not consider anywhere else for dinner as, after 35,000 steps, there could be nowhere more perfect than La Cocina Criolla. This time, my food was equally as brilliant as my wife’s.

Top tip: Consult the waiter (maybe using Google translate although Elias does have some English) if there are any specials on; such as fish of the day etc. We had perfect fish, vegetables and rice that we couldn’t see on the displayed menu.

A true hidden gem. If you want to feel like you just had a good home cooked meal by someone that treats you like family then eat here. Lidia is the owner and she could not be anymore kind and hospitable to my husband and I. Her food is fresh, hot, she spends time explaining everything to you. She is interested in having you try something new if you show interest. We loved absolutely everything we ate here and HIGHLY SUGGEST it. Pastel de choclo (a big piece of chicken, egg, olives, covered in a herb corn purée and baked in an clay pot type bowl), cazuela pollo & carne (delicious homemade soup with fresh vegetables, potato, either meat or chicken in the same clay like bowl, a fish sandwich with is Merluza (Hake) that was made to order, fried on a bun, the salad has a nice lemon dressing, and we tried a special dessert from the region which was made is soaked barley and plum (forgot the name). Oh and the carne empanadas were the best we have had on this trip. It was all great. Would eat here again for sure....

Una experiencia inolvidable en La Cocina Criolla

Durante nuestras vacaciones de verano en Puerto Natales (feb 2025), después de un día increíble pero agotador en el Lago Grey, decidimos buscar un lugar acogedor para cenar. Fue así como llegamos a La Cocina Criolla, sin saber que este restaurante no solo nos ofrecería una comida deliciosa, sino también una muestra de verdadera hospitalidad y calidez humana.

Desde que llegamos, el ambiente nos envolvió con su calidez familiar. La decoración es encantadora y acogedora, transmitiendo ese sentimiento de estar en casa. Nos recibió Elías, quien con amabilidad nos guió a nuestra mesa. En la barra se encontraba Magdiel Guerrero, y en la cocina, la talentosa dueña, Lidia, quien prepara cada plato con dedicación.

Sin embargo, lo que hizo de esta experiencia algo realmente especial fue un giro inesperado. Ese día, el viento del Lago Grey me había provocado una fuerte irritación ocular, al punto de una inflamación preocupante. Mi esposa, Daniela, preocupada, preguntó a Elías si conocía algún médico o farmacia cercana, pues era sábado en la noche y resultaba difícil encontrar atención.

Grande fue nuestra sorpresa cuando Elías nos señaló al Dr. Magdiel Guerrero, quien estaba en la barra y nos dijo que era “el mejor médico de Natales y una excelente persona” (y no se equivocó). Con una amabilidad excepcional, el doctor accedió a revisarme y, en una hoja de cuaderno, escribió una receta para que pudiera comprar los medicamentos necesarios. Como muestra de agradecimiento, lo invitamos a compartir la mesa con nuestra familia, y así, entre conversaciones y risas, disfrutamos de una cena maravillosa.

La comida en La Cocina Criolla es espectacular: pedí una cazuela de vacuno, perfecta en sabor y preparación, mientras mi familia disfrutaba otros platos igualmente exquisitos. Se nota el cariño con el que cada plato es preparado y servido.

Este lugar no es solo un restaurante; es una experiencia que combina la gastronomía con la calidez humana, convirtiendo una simple cena en un recuerdo inolvidable. Si visitas Puerto Natales, La Cocina Criolla es un imperdible. ¡Gracias Lidia, Elías y Dr. Magdiel por hacer de nuestra noche algo especial!
