Edit: The restaurant called me and told me they checked the CCTV and confirmed that the waiter kept touching our friend. They have informed me that he was new and has since been fired. I really appreciate that the restaurant followed up on this issue and made sure this wouldn't happen again.
My friends and I wanted to try an authentic Italian dining experience, so we found AMA and decided to try it out.
Before we even got to our table, the staff seemed upset? I had booked for 5 people but one of my friends canceled. When I requested to change the seating to 4 people, the staff asked for my name, highlighted it in her book, and walked away without gesturing us to follow. I wasn't sure if I had done something to offend her...
After we were seated, a waiter greeted us and handed us our menus. We discussed what we wanted and settled on the Baccala cod fish, AMA la burrata, Blue prawn tartare, Maccheroni Amatriciana, and Vongole.
We enjoyed the cod fish and the amatriciana, but the tartare barely had any prawns and was mostly beets with tomatoes. The vongole was bitter (I'm not sure if it's supposed to taste that way) and the clams had a lot of grit in them.
As the food kept coming, the waiter would often come to our table to check on us. We started noticing that he kept touching one of our friend's backs. At first we thought he was being friendly, but no wait staff should ever touch a customer that much... He would touch her back and would keep standing closer to her every time he came back. Eventually, our friend who sat beside her had to put her arm around our friend so the waiter would stop touching her back. We were all very uncomfortable with his behaviour.
We asked for the bill and when he came back with it, he grabbed our friend's shoulder and squeezed. He tried asking her for a tip twice, but she wouldn't give it.
The atmosphere was great and the food was alright with a few misses. But it's the service that sealed it for us and we will not be...
ย ย ย Read moreWe just had the most incredible dinner at AMA Ristorante in Wan Chai @amaristorante_hk @paolo_monti_chefhk ! ๐ฝ๏ธโค๏ธ The ambiance transported us straight to Rome, with cozy lighting and classic films playing on the big screen, making it perfect for a romantic date or special celebration.
We opted for the two-person dinner package, and every dish was a culinary masterpiece! ๐โจ
For starters, we enjoyed the Beef Carpaccio, which was a showstopper; the beef was so tender and thinly sliced, drizzled with aromatic olive oil that elevated the flavors in every bite, leaving us craving more. Next, the Palle di Trippa offered a unique twist with its rich and savory flavor profile; the tripe was incredibly tender and paired beautifully with a refreshing mint sauce that added a burst of freshness. The Scamorza with Porcini and Asparagus was perfectly creamy, complemented by earthy mushrooms and crisp asparagus, and spreading it on warm bread created a delightful layering of textures and flavorsโpure heaven! ๐๐ซ
For the pasta course, the Linguine AllโAstice was a highlight; the linguine was cooked to perfectionโsilky and smoothโwhile the lobster was fresh and succulent. The addition of zucchini and cherry tomatoes gave the dish a lovely crunch and freshness, making it a standout pasta experience. ๐๐ฆ
Moving on to the main courses, the Costata al Carbone was a true carnivoreโs delight; the steak was seasoned beautifully, boasting a perfect char on the outside while remaining juicy and tender inside. The hint of wasabi added a surprising kick that enhanced the beefโs natural flavors. Finally, the Baccala In Guazzetto featured a crispy cod fillet sitting in a light broth infused with Roman tomatoes, raisins, and pine nuts, creating a delightful balance of savory and sweetโeach bite was bursting with flavor!
If youโre looking for a dining experience thatโs as delightful as the food, AMA Ristorante is an absolute MUST! ๐๐ท We canโt...
ย ย ย Read moreWe had high expectations of this place before going in - the menu looked promising and as authentic as you would get in HK, so much so that I booked it for a special occasion instead of other fine dining restaurants. However, this has been, for the most part, a let down.
It wasn't all bad though. I would rate the pici pasta a 7/10 and the sea bass a 8.5 out of 10. The starters and pizza however, were outrageously overpriced and borderline ridiculous. We ordered zucchini and flowers as our starter and were shock to find out that it was simply 2 flowers with 4 small slices of zucchini. How is this $148? It was fried nicely with a fluffy batter, but it was mostly tasteless and served with no sauce. The bone marrow and the amatriciana pizza were underwhelming and overpriced as well, especially the pizza. For $208, I expected large portions with generous amount of guanciale, but neither were true, and the worst part was we could barely taste the tomato sauce, the key ingredient for an amatriciana. For someone that refers to himself as the "amatricianist", we expected better.
Service was lukewarm and low energy, but nevertheless polite. Honestly if the starters were priced better, this could potentially be a restaurant that we would frequent as we found some other items on the menu interesting. However at the current price, I most certainly...
