If you're craving some fresh egg tarts that you know will taste good no matter which location you buy it from, you have to try Tai Cheong Bakery. They're located all around Hong Kong and sell amazingly delicious egg tarts.

Even if you're not aware that there's a store selling egg tarts nearby, the delicious aroma from the bakery will be taken in and you'll find your feet leading you to the store. Plus, the many Tai Cheong Bakery signs with pictures of enticing egg tarts are sure to get your attention.

I've been to a few different locations throughout Hong Kong and loved each egg tart I've gotten. Each one is about $1 USD, and if you come during a certain time, you're able to score a discount on the egg tarts or pastry items. Tai Cheong sells bread, salted egg pastries, and other goodies, but seriously - you only need to get the egg tarts and you'll be happy.

Egg tarts were a golden yellow and firm in the middle. The crust is slightly flaky, but has a similar texture of a cookie crust. These egg tarts are much taller in height as opposed to being wide, which means you get a lot more filling per egg tart. The filling is delicious - not too sweet, but still has that true egg taste. Taking a bite along with the crust - the best midday, morning, afternoon, nighttime snack.

Many of the Tai Cheong bakeries have these gigantic egg tart sculptures next to their storefront where you can take a picture with an egg tart. It's amazing. Highly recommend you trying the egg tarts - especially when they're fresh! But if they aren't fresh, they're still tasty.

Egg tarts sell out quickly! I still think the best egg tarts are from Gold Garden Café in HK. Kam Wah Café is a close second, and then I would rate Tai Cheong right after. I'm sure there are a lot more local mom and pop shops that have amazing egg tarts, but these three are...

My wife and I had the pleasure of trying some of Tai Cheong's famous tarts on our most recent trip to Hong Kong. Our order included a signature custard tart, a coconut tart and a matcha tart along with a Pineapple bun. Personally, wasn't a fan of the flavor of the matcha tart, it almost tasted like lime to me, the signature custard tart was tasty, but slightly blander than other custard tart's i've had. The coconut tart however was one of our best bites on the trip! It had a perfect balance of coconut flavor and milky custard, it was slightly sweet, but not overpowering. The crumb at Tai Cheong is phenomenal! Consistently the best crumb on any tart from the bakeries that we tried in Hong Kong.

Pineapple bun is very OK. I'm not sure why that's such a hyped pastry in Hong Kong, but I really don't think you need to try it.

Overall, I think Tai Cheong is definitely worth a visit! The location is really good and allows you to buy tarts then walk over to a nearby coffee shop / cafe to enjoy your tarts with a really good cup of...

Tai Chong Bakery is a famous maker of local egg tarts (daan ta) that has been serving up these treats on the streets of Hong Kong since 1954. This is a very popular place to try for visitors interested in trying local speciality foods. Opening hours are 8am to 8.30pm daily.

Prices have increased considerably in recent years. Tarts are now HK$10 each, up from HK$6 just 5 years ago. Regardless, expect a queue entering Tai Chong Bakery most of the day.

The tarts a Tai Chong Bakery are pretty good. The custard is egg based. It is thick, smooth, creamy and and moderately sweet. The crust is well formed and holds the tart together nicely while you eat it.

In the end, is it worth standing in a long queue on hot summer day to try the tarts here? Probably not. However, if the queue is short or you just really want to try famous local eateries around Hong Kong than go on and have a tart or two at Tai Cheong Bakery. They are as good as anywhere else...

Quality of food: 5/5 - melt in your mouth crust pairs well with the creamy egg filling. The egg tart was fresh and warm and I ate it in two bites it was so delicious. There are two different types of crusts: the typical tart crust and a pastry crust. Try both. Egg tarts are a Hong Kong staple and Tai Cheongs deeply rooted history makes it a must try. Cleanliness: 5/5 - very clean and well lit store. Take out only there is no room to sit. Service: 5/5 - quick service with minimal wait time. The staff speaks English very well. Value for money: 4/5 - 10 hkd per egg tart at time of review, which is reasonably priced, considering the location in Central Recommendation: 5/5 - definitely worth a detour just to try the egg tarts. I would recommend trying the two varieties of crusts. Eat at least one tart outside the store when it is still hot and as the chef/baker intended. If you order many egg tarts (I ordered 6) it comes in a lovely box.

Look, pastries are life. Nothing better than a nice, flaky, creamy egg tart fresh from the oven. And Tai Cheong are the experts of it. The shopfront looks cheerful and lovely with a variety of baked goods on display, but we're here for just one item. The egg tarts. A glistening golden yellow, surrounded by a flaky, crumbly pastry crust, every bite of the egg tart is a delight, especially freshly baked on a chilly winter evening. The egg custard centre is creamy and rich, but smooth as silk and with a delicate sweetness that's not overpowering. I could eat a dozen of them. Side note: the cheese tarts are amazing too. Parking is difficult (as is most of Central) but service is brisk. Fresh egg tarts are carted out every few hours. Definitely one to try if you're nearby. I flew from Malaysia for this lol.
