I got a very happy and cheerful Mexican welcome at Taqueria Super Macho last evening. The Japanese style that I’ve gotten, usually at ramen places.
Picture pastel vibrancy and happy Mexican music. The vibe of the place couldn’t have been better.
My jarrito loco was tequila, jalapeno liqueur and lots of citrus fruits. It hit the spot for me on the liquor. I had eaten small that day. On the taste – it was lopsided on the sour side, but that chilli spice mix the glass was lined with complemented the tang of the drink very well. As I got towards the end of the drink, I got that hint of sweetness.
The tacos came with chopped onions & cilantro, lime wedges, a sour cream mayonnaise mix and salsa roja. The sweet server talked me into ordering the spicy habanero salsa. I rarely get talked into doing anything.
The good part was that the salsas were great.
The bad part was that the taco was tiny. TINY. My hand for reference.
But, it delivered on the taste. And it’s one of the better Mexican places in Hong Kong that I’ve tried, yet.
That chilli roasted pumpkin was perfection on the taco. It was interesting how the servers asked if I knew how to “assemble” my taco and made sure they informed me to begin with the onions-cilantro mix and a squeeze of lime before diving into the salsas or sour cream.
For my small order of a taco, followed by another (because it was that small), I’m sure I left them wondering on how on earth I polished up those salsas. Hey, I’m a spciy girl 😉
The taste buds were satiated, but I left hungry. Didn’t do the quesadilla because if I took out the cheese and the cream, it would’ve been high and dry.
Rice / beans catering to vegetarians would’ve been appreciated, if not more.
Also, the Blacksheep Restaurants sure are hiring their people right. Their service is always proactively friendly.
Even though I’m still waiting for their Maison Libanaise manager to get back to me, as promised. I had not one but two back to back sloppy orders of the cauliflower bowl with undercooked and hardly seasoned cauliflower!
But, cheers to a small but good Mexican meal! Then onto some serious tête-à-tête with the hubster.

Read moreWe recently dined at Taqueria Super Macho on Bridges Street near PMQ in Sheung Wan and had a really nice meal. This is a relatively new place from the Black Sheep Group, open 6-11.45pm (Mon-Sat) and 5-10pm (Sun).
What you find here is a Baja style taco-bar, friendly staff and casual seating. Menu features a range of tacos, small plates and ceviches, perfect for light round of bites and drinks. They have a small range of Mexican beers and other cocktails as well.
During our meal we enjoyed well-made frozen margaritas and pretty much everything they served when it came to the food. We tried their snapper ceviche and a special hamachi they were offering on the night. Both were good, the hamachi was delicious. As special note for the street corn that was very well seasoned and tasty.
We also tried a handful of tacos that come partially ready to eat with four dipping bowls with extra toppings and sauces. They will recommend which toppings to include with the tacos if helpful. The meat was seasoned and grilled well, toppings flavourful. These were very good little tacos.
Note, the tacos are small, we'd suggest 2-4 per person depending on how hungry you are. Another 1-2 small plates or ceviche per person makes for a good meal.
Overall, we really liked Taqueria Super Macho. We have some really bad Mexican restaurants in Hong Kong, this is not one of them. Good job by the Black Sheep and Taqueria Super Macho team. We look forward to our...
Read moreThis place is as close to authentic Mexican food as your going to find in HK. I'm not gonna lie I was skeptical when I first saw the chips and tacos but I was amazed at much it actually tasted like real Mexican food.
The chips were amazing and the salsa likewise. This seems like a trivial task at first thought but its amazing how many places suck at chips and salsa. This my guys, is not one of those places. I dont know if they actually deep fry corn tortillas or what but whatever they do I hope they never stop. If your not hungry, at least stop for the chips n salsa.
Tacos were literally perfect, tortillas cooked well, meat seasoning matched the contents of the taco perfectly...not overpowering...not underwhelming, the sauces on the tacos didnt drown them or cause suffering from severe taco drought. I have literally 0 complaints on the tacos, well they could be a bit bigger of course but thats only because they're so good.
I just wanted to mention that I'm from the mid west in the u.s. and if you've been there you probably already know about the Mexican food. Really big Hispanic population and endless choices of ultra authentic down home Mexican food. HK on the contrary is an ultra authentic let down when it comes to Mexican food. This place refreshingly enough doesnt follow that trend. A bit expensive yea but its Shueng Wan and it tastes authentic so its worth every damn penny.
Great job to the staff. Keep doing what...
