Wai Kee is located inside the Bowrington Road Cooked Food Centre together with a few other restaurants on the first floor of the Bowrington Road Market in the Wan Chai and Causeway Bay area. You can either take the elevator or a walk up a set of stairs on the side of the market building. Most importantly, Wai Kee is Muslim friendly as the food served are all “Halal”.
The Bowrington Road Cooked Food Centre a bustling food court. You see people and waiters running around and shouting. Once you are seated, a waiter will walk up to you and prod you to make an order immediately. You will not have the luxury of time to read through the whole menu. Meaning - you have to look up the Wai Kee menu in advance online to know and order on the spot what you wish to eat. Watching the high turnover of the tables in the food court, it is definitely a fast-paced dining. And do expect to have to share a table with other people.
The waitress left and returned with the Roast Duck with Rice I ordered within a minute. The roast duck was already sliced and chopped up, and nicely laid out over a plate of rice. Every piece had three layers – the skin, the fat and the meat. The skin is very glossy and crispy. The fat was thin and of a fair amount. The meat was fairly tender. Each piece gave a crispy, fatty and meaty experience in your mouth. And it is very tasty and delicious. The rice was a bit dry and sticky but it was tasty after absorbing the flavors from the roast duck.
I love roast duck. I have eaten them a lot when I was in China, during my past visits to Hongkong and in Malaysia. In my humble opinion, the roast duck with rice served in Wai Kee was definitely a winner. It was served in a good portion, enough to fill you up. For HKD$47 per plate, it was a fair price for a great Wai Kee roast duck experience.
Wai Kee is also very known for its Mutton Curry with Rice. I will definitely give it a try at another mealtime during my 5 days stay in Hongkong.
My humble opinion - If you are looking for fine dining, to have a quiet meal and comfortably seated all by yourself, either alone or with family, then this food court is definitely not for you. But if you are looking for a great delicious roast duck experience, I definitely recommend a visit to Wai Kee. Not just for the roast duck but to experience the hustle and bustle in a food court...
Read moreUsually I am quite skeptical when recommended to try some unusual dishes not native to the local food scene. Yet sometimes you get a surprise when you find a hidden gem. Definitely off the beaten track, here is a Halal Da Pai Dong in Central Hong Kong serving Roast Duck and Curry Mutton to Muslims. Still, when you see a packed eatery with a long queue at a mid afternoon between lunch and dinner hours, it's gotta be good. I ordered the recommended, the same as what everyone has on the table. Curry Mutton Ribs and Briskets with rice. When it was served, it somewhat looked like our mutton curry with rice instead of pratas. That's where the surprise lies. This Muslim curry is prepared by an all Chinese team, Muslims or not I do not know. The curry is fragrant with a deep savoury lamp chop fragrance, and a light hint of cumins, tumeric and ginger heat. No heavy curry spices or seasonings. Best of all, no gamey tastes even though they pack a nice punch of lamb fragrance and some heat from the ginger and peppers. The tender lamb brisket has a thin lining of fats and soft tendons, bouncy soft and juicy, and goes perfectly well with steamed rice. The curry would be a little thick to go with prata, yet light and addictively slurpable. If I have to place it as a Singaporean, it would be like a dense Mutton Rendang but a light and watery version, yet much more flavourful and rich compared to a mutton Prata curry. I am definitely coming back for more of this. A steal of a light meal in a hidden...
