Baan Thai is a hidden Thai restaurant with 3 branches in HK. The service is very nice and attentive, and the atmosphere was very warm and cozy!
The drinks were amazing and the food was very authentic.
What we ordered: 🍹Exotic Lychee Mojito $118 (9/10) This drink was very refreshing. It used fresh lychee, making it sweet and also used fresh lime and mint leaves, which helped create a balance between the sweetness. It also used a Thai soda, adding a hint of fizz to it. The alcohol taste was not too strong in this drink which I liked.
🍤Baan Thai Spicy Prawns $138 (9/10) The prawns were so juicy and tender. They were fried using a light batter, adding a nice crisp, making it less heavy. The spicy mayo sauce that drenched all over it made it soo addicting! However, a little more spice could be added!
🍖Crispy Pork Belly $108 (7.5/10) This tasted like a Thai version of HK style crispy pork belly. However, the exterior was all fried, making the pork a bit too hard. But other than that the pork was so flavourful and paired well with the spicy sauce.
🥗Spicy Papaya Salad $108 (7.8/10) The papaya was perfectly ripe, and with the tomatoes made it very refreshing. The umami taste from the fermented fish sauce provided a sweet, salty and sour taste. However, it wasn’t spicy enough for me😂
🦞Phad Thai Lobster $398 (8/10) The phad thai had a sweet and sour flavour, which provided a balance between the two. After squeezing the lime juice, it made it even more flavourful. The crunchy peanuts and bean sprouts added a nice texture to the soft noodles, and most of the lobster was tender.
🥭 Mango Sticky Rice $88 (9/10) The warm rice paired with the cool sweet mango made it the perfect dessert! I haven’t eaten much fresh mayo sticky rice but the rice was not too soft yet not too hard, and the coconut cream was not too sweet and was rich in flavour. I also liked how they give you both types of rice!
Definitely try this hidden Thai restaurant with friends, as it has a great atmosphere, service,...
Read moreIt was a Friday night, and there was a large group of diners who were clearly enjoying themselves and drinking heavily. They were seated in a separate, enclosed private section. Unfortunately, they were overly jovial, to the point where someone from the group started kissing the glass door. Their laughter and loud conversation made it difficult for anyone else in the restaurant to have a proper conversation.
While the servers were very attentive to our needs and deserve a 5-star rating, the atmosphere was significantly impacted by the loud group. This is why I only gave a 3-star rating for the atmosphere.
I personally prefer my green papaya salad julienned and seasoned with crunchy dried shrimp for that fish sauce-like taste. If you prefer a salad without the fishy touch and a hearty bite, this could be for you.
The Pad Thai is good and has a generous serving of prawns, but they could be seared a bit more for added flavor and texture.
The star of the night was definitely the Thai Pork Belly. It was perfectly cooked, with a delightful crunch and savory flavor. The special Thai chili sauce elevated the dish, adding a touch of heat and complexity that made every bite a joy.
My only less-than-perfect dish was the pork skewer. While it was well-seasoned and paired perfectly with the house-made peanut sauce, the meat was unfortunately tough and dry, lacking the smoky flavor you'd expect from charcoal grilling.
Overall, I'll definitely be back to try the other dishes on the menu. Hopefully, I'll have better luck and avoid encountering another large, boisterous crowd like the one I...
Read moreHong Kong’s restaurant scene is really tough these days. Though I don’t usually write food reviews, I want to encourage this small eatery for both their food quality and excellent service.
My daughter and I ordered chicken satay (6 skewers). The chicken was super tender and well-seasoned, with a rich, fragrant coconut satay sauce. Only downside: the sauce portion was a bit small.
The stir-fried water spinach was cooked perfectly; my daughter finished it quickly.
The yellow curry beef had a thick, slightly sweet coconut sauce. The onions were unexpectedly crisp and sweet. The beef was tender (probably tenderlion), and surprisingly generous in portion. The potatoes tasted mild, unlike typical yellow potatoes in other places.
We also had a big bowl of rice (enough for two) and 6 pieces of garlic bread, crispy outside and soft inside—an absolute must-try.
My daughter had a Mango Milk Shake that looked more like a smoothie but tasted great. I ordered a Pepsi, though it was a bit flat.
When we were ready to leave, the waitress reminded us of the dessert we hadn’t tried and gave us a discount. Their smiles at the door are rare to see in HK...
