This is a very busy location so be prepared for a wait!
Via Tokyo serves Japanese desserts, pastries and soft serves made with Kyoto matcha powder and Hokkaido milk. Uji city in Kyoto is considered one of the regions for higher quality matcha and the milk from Hokkaido is regarded as much more aromatic.
When we got to the store, we realized that it was Wednesday aka "Reverse Tokyo" day and therefore no matcha would be served. Instead, all matcha products would be replaced with Hoijicha - Japanese green tea roasted in a porcelain pot over charcoal resulting in a nutty, toasty, slightly caramel-like flavor.
The inside of the store is tiny with tight seating for at most 20 people. Add to it the lines of people waiting in the store for takeout, it because a little crowded. The store has a self-serve format where customers walk up to the counter to order and receive their food and beverages.
The hoijicha cheesecake was good... made with houjicha cheesecake, lemon cream, houjicha mousse, mixed citrus peels and osmanthus... it had a strong roasted flavour and was very creamy.
The hoijicha macaroon was incredible. It had a houjicha macaron Shell, raspberries, houjicha ganache, almond nougatine and mixed citrus peels. Absolutely to die for!
For "beverages" I got the affogato. Never having had it before, I was very pleasantly surprised. The bitterness of the expresso was well balanced with the sweetness of the Hoikkado milk flavour. I couldn't get enough of it!
The Hoijicha latte was also good - creamy and roasty but nothing too special.
If I come back, I am dying to try the green tea affogato - made with matcha soft serve and matcha latte to pour on top although I am now wondering whether the two flavours would be a little...

Read moreTerrible Service, Average Ice Cream – Not Worth the Visit
I recently visited this ice cream shop and had an extremely disappointing experience. The service was outright terrible. The shopkeeper informed us that there was a minimum charge per person and refused to let us stay because we had a child who only ordered one ice cream. This kind of policy is not only unreasonable but also incredibly unwelcoming, especially for families.
To make matters worse, the ice cream itself was just average in quality – nothing special to justify the poor treatment we received. I would not recommend this place to anyone, as the horrible service completely ruined what should have been a simple and enjoyable outing.
Be prepared for strict policies and unfriendly staff if you decide to visit. There are far better options out there with better service...
