The casado sweet spot. On the recommendation of someone at the Explore Monteverde information center on the corner of the main drag, I ate here with my two brothers around 3:30 P.M. We had just hiked through one of the cloud forest trails and so, as you might have guessed, were hungry.
For $25.91 USD, the three of us got bebidos naturales (which were how all the restaurants in the Monteverde region refer to batidos) and plenty of food: meat, a hefty portion of rice, a large fried plantain, salad with a tomato-mango salsa, and a slice of cheese. The cheese was rather light and a little spongey, but everything else was delicious. This was slightly more expensive than the casados we had at Soda Brasilito earlier in the week, but the portions were much larger.
Coupled with the full-on restaurant environment, this would be a great choice for anyone, but especially a family. Both tourists and locals seemed to be eating here, and we would go back again if we had more time. Five stars.
A tip: try the guanabana-flavored bebido natural. It’s not at all sour and quite a nice change of pace from more...
Read moresunset view, good food, inconsistent portions, 10% fee is extra After reading some good reviews and by recommendation of our hotel, we went to this restaurant for dinner. I think there are 2 locations - we visited the one on the 2nd floor of the shopping mall. If you time it right, you get to see a sunset - beautiful. We sat outside for about 20 min, but it became quite chilly right after sunset, so we moved inside. Food was fine, though portion sizes vary considerably and may be inconsistent: casadas are huge, but quesadilla with fries had a very small handful of fries (though the same quesadilla on the next table came with a large portion of fries. My teenager was disappointed). Special grandma chicken consisted mainly of bones... Gallo de arracache was very tasty. Prices are reasonable but they do not include 10% service fee - it will be added to the bill The restaurant is large with lots of people but that we...
Read moreThis was the only place that had any space and we went in and had something to eat. What a mistake.
I chose the soup and my wife the grill. It came out of the kitchen pretty rapidly which is never a good sign.
There was a lot of the grill and soup in terms of quantity but oh boy. Grill meat was lumps of pork, ribs and chicken, plantain.... Dry as a bone. More than likely it had been sitting waiting for the unsuspecting tourist.
The soup was ok with large lumps of meat and vegetables. It was passable but only just.
There were lots of people there who seemed happy (or just not bothered) and either we had just been unlucky and ordered the wrong thing or are just picky.
My advice? If you can find somewhere else then do that. There is a lot of choice. We had been to Don Luis the night before which was so much better.
Unfortunately we didn't take any pictures of the grill and the...
