We had the most wonderful time in Monteverde Butterfly gardens! The place is located in Monteverde Cloud Forest. We had an opportunity to have Roberto Saenz as our guide and we were impressed how knowledgeable he was. He is passionate about sharing his vast knowledge to all of us. We were a large group and we all of us, children and adults learned so much about butterfly’s habitat and all other insects. My children were able to smell touch and feel all kids of insects. Roberto talks with great enthusiasm to children and is able to engage with all ages. My children leaned more this afternoon than in any other textbook. They had seen many pictures in textbooks but were able to relate to every animal they saw. We saw tarantulas, other gigantic roaches, we listen to birds singing, we learn about butterflies and their life journey.. we were all amazed with so much fun information. Also, we took many pictures and videos of the plants since they are magnificent nature all around it. I highly recommend this place to any parent and also for any adult who want to stimulate their knowledge. Ask for Roberto Saenz, he should have his own...
Read moreNice place to explore butterflies We spent a couple of hours in this garden (on the way back to town after visiting Monteverde Reserve). They have several types of butterflies there (not too many, maybe around 10?). We were lucky - it was a very sunny day and butterflies were active. The guided tour is interesting, we learned some facts about local butterflies and also got to see caterpillars of various butterflies + some interesting plants (like Dutch pipe and passion flower). After the guided tour in the garden we also attended a presentation/demonstration of some other Costa Rican insects - some really cool leaf-looking bugs, tarantula, centipedes, etc. We were relieved to learn that none of CR creatures have poison strong enough to kill a human being (even scorpions) - what a relief . I would say visiting at least one butterfly garden during your CR trip is a good idea as you can see those beautiful creatures close and personal (picking a sunny day would certainly help to see them active). We enjoyed our visit - staff was very friendly and helpful, and the owner helped us to order a taxi to go...
Read moreMore than a butterfly garden, this deceivingly small roadside attraction houses many kinds of entomological exhibits. Roberto, the knowledgeable and contagiously enthusiastic initial teacher, delves into the lives of tarantulas, scorpions, giant Blaberous roaches and other arthropods while holding live specimen in his hands to show them closely to the audience as he walks about the room. One of the beetles that he showed us had eyes that flashed on and off because they have the same kind of luminous chemical as fireflies and were especially interesting. Then Maddy and Nia lead the walks through the three butterfly cages, which have a profusion of blue morphos, swallowtails and many more species emulating three climatological zones, surrounded by beautiful flora and fed with fruit. All of the guides patiently answered our many questions. It's easy to take photographs or videosand you can't help but learn something about...
