Soda cantón 83 Family business — Restaurant in Monteverde

Came here on a recommendation from our wildlife guide, and it did not disappoint. We got the ceviche, papa nachos, and smoked ribs, and everything was delicious. Note that there’s a few parking spots out front, but the place is quite small so it may get busy during peak hours.

Ceviche: I’m mildly allergic to seafood and thus far from a ceviche expert, but this tasted super fresh and was also recommended to us by another group of visitors at the restaurant. Great item to share.

Papa nachos: The staff told us that this was one of the most popular items with locals. They are essentially loaded fries and my favorite of the three things we ordered. You can get them with beef or with chicken (or, if you ask nicely, the secret third option – half beef and half chicken).

Smoked ribs: My only complaint is that I wish this came with more pieces of the smoked ribs, since they were so crisp and flavorful.

I'm deeply ashamed that it has taken me over a month to write this review. Canton 83 was an absolute highlight of our not so recent trip to costa rica. This family owned and run business is exactly the kind of place that our family seeks out. Typical food of the region done with heart and passion. Everything we had was amazing, but especially the chicken rice, all of the shrimp, and solid vegetarian options. The owners are so hard working, and clearly beloved by locals, and annoying tourists like myself. We never repeat meals while travelling, but went back here 3 times, and would have been there more, if their hours had aligned better with our schedule. Be patient with the service. It's literally a mom and pop (and grandma) run business, but the wait time for food is absolutely worth the extra time. The quality of food is extraordinary considering the small staff. Highly recommend. Top place we ate in Costa Rica, and one of our new favorite places...

Now this is a truly 5 star restaurant. It's a family run business and they serve with lots of love and attention. The service is super quick.

We had food at other sodas in Costa Rica and were skeptical whether 5 star reviews were reasonable or not (I've seen misleading ratings on Google) and whether the food would be that much different from other sodas. Add to that I could have only vegetarian food, so my options were limited. I'm happy to say that I was wrong. It is AMAZING!!!

We absolutely loved Chifrijo Canton 83. It was very delicious, ingredients were very fresh and heat and spices were just perfect. Nachos were very crispy and went perfectly well with the dish. The presentation was really good, something that I was not expecting at a soda.

Arroz vegetariano was really good as well. It was flavorful and portions were really good.

Overall really good...
