A second class restaurant trying to disguise itself as a first class one. From the moment we called them to reserve a table we have started seeing red flags but unfortunately we avoided those red flags due to numerous good reviews. When we got to the place it felt weird that a high-end restaurant is situated in such a weird place. Then when we entered the heavy cigarette smoke smell from the personel room hit our nose. There was no one to greet so we waited but no one came. So we climbed upstairs and met a waiter who showed us to our table, which is a 4 person table with 3 chairs because a column of the building is in the place of the 4th chair. We were a party of 2 who was in the game of shutting our eyes to red flags so we continued. We ordered and had to change the order since some of the items on the menu were not available. When our food came we were deeply disappointed by the taste and the inconsistencies between the dish and the menu. We couldn’t finish the meal due to the subpar taste. One of the most interesting things that we encountered was when we ordered a new glass of wine, rhetorical waiter brought the new glass of wine and poured the little wine left in the old glass into the new glass. First time I am encountering something like this. Overall, despite it trying to be a first class restaurant, it is a second class restaurant with below average food. The only good thing is that it’s priced accordingly. I would not recommend it go again. Hope they will become the first class restaurant they aspire...
Read moreWe went to this restaurant on account of the myriad positive reviews but ultimately disagree with the wider consensus. For context we ordered the octopus salad, cuttlefish risotto, swordfish steak, calamari fritti and two rump steaks (at the server’s suggestion). While it is plausible that the bland and coarse food quality was on account of its “authenticity”, the only passable dish was the risotto. From the moment we arrived we were met with an extremely helpful but borderline overbearing server, who vigorously directed us to order the tuna tataki (it is off menu) alongside other items without knowing any customer preferences- which we have had to politely decline after being pressed. We noticed that at least 3 neighbouring tables ordered the tuna tataki, speaking to the server’s general prowess at enforcing the restaurant’s preference. In general there was an overwhelming sense of entitlement and misplaced bravado which was only charming in its initial moments. The gentleman topped it off with a “highly recommended” yet gruesome chocolate vesuvius which I invite all visitors to order for the sheer shock of it. In summary, should you visit as a tourist you will be provided a guided culinary tour through a more unfortunate facet of Italian cuisine. However the price point prevents over expectation and accounts for two of the stars in...
Read moreWhile visiting Split Croatia we were referred to restaurant Duje by several local residents. We deem this restaurant a hidden gem of Split. The food it local, fresh and delicious. The staff was terrific. Our first visit was for lunch. We told our waiter generally what we were thinking of and put overselves in his hands. He brought a tuna salad with a generous helping of sliced tuna, fresh and perfectly seared, over a bed of greens and potato. The tuna was really fresh and delicious. Our other meal was clams on a bed of pasta with garlic sauce, also delicious. Our second visit was for dinner at which time we ordered two different pasta dishes, one with seafood and tomato based sauce and the other with beef and a mushroom, truffle sauce. The flavors were fantastic. Be sure to order their pizza bread to mop up the left over sauce. We ended with a dessert called Vesuvius which was a delicious surprise. We found the food to be excellent and the best we experienced in Split and the staff treated us like family (in the good way). Duje is highly...
