Had dinner here last night. We were having high hopes for this place as the reviews were good. My wife and I ordered sea food risotto and mussles. We were let down by both service and food.

Service: not very good. There was hardly any conversation in general. After a couple of minutes we ordered drinks. Then the waiter asked "Fish?" and nothing else, and we said we haven't decided yet as we just walked in. He started cleaning the plates, and I said we need a few minutes to decide and then he put the plates back on the table. During this entire time the only word he said was the first question, "Fish?". The whole service was like this for our entire dinner. One thing we found disturbing was that another waitress was cleaning her nails at one of he dining tables.

Food: tasted ok, and seemed to be fresh. Mussels were on the salty side. What was not acceptable for this price range was that, for both dishes, a powder vegetable stock like the one sold at any supermarkets, like "Vegeta", was being used. The taste was obvious but I was sure because there were these dried carrot things you find in these stock, like the one you get in cup noodles. This is definitely not what I would expect when a dish costs between 15 to 20 euros each.

I don't know if the quality went down recently, but we were not too happy...

Nostromo sits right off the fish market in Split, so it is no wonder that the seafood is fresh and top notch. The hostess was one of the friendliest people we met in Croatia, but unfortunately the waiter was one of the least friendly. The fish is grilled on a grill you can kind of see from the dining room. Unfortunately due to the NYT nod, this place is now swarming with Americans and Brits which we found quite distracting while trying to enjoy a meal. Service was very brusque and refused to offer any opinions on recommendations. We didn't even know there was a catch of the day option until after ordering and seeing another table get it which looked like the way to go for sure. The octopus salad was good with a nice tart seasoning though the scampi gnocchi were just ok. The gnocchi were plump and chewy as should be, but the scampi was a bit lacking in boldness.
