Why Isn't Everyone Raving About Croatia's 🇭🇷 Amazing Food?!

For our last dinner in Split, we wanted to find the best place, after looking at the reviews of several restaurants and reading the excellent ratings of this place we decided to make a reservation. Our expectations were not met, the service, in general, is good. As the main course we both ordered "Ballad of the salted Sea", due to the fact that it included shrimp + blue crab and we hadn't had the opportunity to eat them on our trip. The portion was between normal and small, the tagliatelle was al dente, but Oh surprise! that on the plate we only found some tiny shrimp 🍤 (the ones you find frozen in any supermarket in Germany are bigger) and almost absolutely no crab, the taste of altogether was quite flat. I don't understand the reviews where they say that the flavors are wonderful, judging by the photos of other users, I would like to think that it was due to the crowd at that time, but the truth is that we were very disappointed by the lack of flavor and seafood, being that they are part of the description. The only totally redeemable thing about the dinner was the "Lavandella" drink, it was delicious, and there was live music while we ate. The menu is fun and original! And quite apart from the restaurant, there are so many people who want a table, that you also find those who are waiting staring at you to see if you have finished and that makes it very uncomfortable hahaha.

I just have to join the choir and declare this hands down to be the best meal we had in Split! We were a group of eight friends having dinner on our last night in Split and we started by having the shared platter of starters for four people plus the chicken pate and the sea pie. It was more than enough for all of us and everything tasted fantastic! It probably would have been a good idea to eat a bit less of the starter but it was soooo worth it!!! Main dishes came along and we had, among other things, the smoked risotto with mussels and prawns, the homemade black spaghetti, the swordfish and the beef cheeks. Everybody were over the moon and everybody ate too much as we could not stop! :-) The place is beautifully decorated and I love the retro choice of music. The only regret is that we were there on our last night, otherwise we would have gone there more than once for sure. Thank you, Corto Maltese, for a fantastic meal!

5 stars I think is understated for this restaurant. The service was excellent, the waiter explained the dishes clearly and it was well presented! He even engaged with us made small jokes which warmed our hearts. The food was just BEYOND! We had the prosciotto as appetizer, and beef cheeck + black risotto. They were all just beyond words! Dont look for other resto when ure in Split, highly recommend this resto. Best dish for me was the black risotto, the cuttle fish was superb, so tender (vs rubbery), savory as I like it, and creamy but not so thick. Beef cheek: Ohh seriously, we didnt know what they did to the mashed potatoes! Wanted to ask how they did it but so scared they might say its their secret recipe. It was well seasoned, with the sweet-tender beef cheek as the star of the dish. Thank you Corto Maltese, you made our short trip full of laugters and happiness. Will definitely come back!

Some of the best pasta dishes we tried whilst in Croatia! The place has a nice buzz and rustic vibe with an open view kitchen which is where the magic happens, really good heart and flavoursome food. The seafood linguine "ballad of the salted sea" is to die for, getting that much flavour into a pasta dish which also visually looks quite simple is no easy feat. It's one of those dishes that just makes you realise that you are actually on holiday. The service is friendly and chilled and the waiters explain the components of the dishes as they serve them which is a lovely touch. All the other dishes tasted just as great and the prices are great for how great these dishes tasted. Highly recommended this place if you're looking for a lively place to eat in Split.
