Narodni trg, or colloquially known as Pjaca, is located to the west of Diocletian's Palace. The square gradually took shape through the expansion of the city in the Middle Ages.
From the late 15th century to the early 19th century, family palaces were built on it, as well as the main city Communal Palace, which occupied the entire northern part of the square. Only a small part remains today known as the old City Hall, which now serves cultural purposes.Adjacent to the City Hall is the Renaissance Karepić building, on the western side of the square the Secessionist Nakić building, and on the southern side the Pavlović Palace.
On the eastern side of the square is the former guard and weapons building. On the same side is a tower above which a city clock was installed in the 15th century, with the clock face divided into 24 hours. Opposite the clock is the Ciprijani Palace with hexaphora window on the first floor and a statue of St. Anthony on the corner.
Today, Narodni trg is a place of social life in Split, where various shops, restaurants, and hotels are located. Narodni trg is an excellent example of a medieval square that everyone should see when...

Still open is one of the oldest book shops in the world, Morpurgo, to this day it looks almost the same as it looked in 1861, and in the Café Central where the intellectuals of Split gathered is where the tourism of Split begun with the former...
Read moreA historic square in the palace area of Split lined with restaurants, cafeterias, bars, shops of all types, bakeries, ice cream parlours in the square and in the adjoining lanes. This quaint place though old is maintained with exceptional standards of cleanliness. It becomes a very lively place buzzing with tourists and an occasional musician playing on another instrument or singing. One can just sit outside in the courtyard and take in the atmosphere and enjoy a leisurely drink or food. A nice...
