To je škoda! Brewery Club (as it was) IS NO MORE!
Ok, bad news first…. Brewery Club had been one of the original craft beer bars/bottle shops in Prague. 240+ bottles plus 6 rotating taps… that place no longer exists and Google needs to be updated…
Benedict has purchased the location, the name, and 6+ years of reviews that the former Brewery Club earned. It has kept the concept of 6 beers on draft (though they are much less exciting/diverse compared to the previous owner - no more Belgian beer, nothing dark on tap) - and the vast archive of vintage bottles that had decorated the walls - documenting 70+ years of Czech brewing - they’re all gone. (See the pictures while they last)
Now the GOOD news: The food is 300% better than the old Brewery Club (even though it had great beer, the food was not very good). Seriously - we had the ‘smažene řizečky z vepřové panenky v sezamová strouhance’ - that was very good & not at all a lazy pork schnitzel, it was not a schnitzel at all & was very well executed. But by far the biggest surprise (honestly, it raised my review from 3* to 4* by itself) was the ‘Kuřecí peso Supreme.’ Simply amazing… as was the dýňová polévka. The neighborhood continues to improve around the location. This had been a pretty rough location & the Brewery club felt like an island in the middle of it. Now that things have improved, the addition of outdoor seating is a welcome addition. While service is not “friendly” from a Western perspective, it was better than many other Czech restaurants & waiters were willing to speak English (instead of just scowling). With proper expectations, you will be pleasantly surprised.
Overall - the reinvention of this location as “Brewery Club Benedict” has significant potential. I urge the management to rethink having an extensive selection of bottles (to provide variety, ensure that there’s something for everyone & make it an Untappd destination “did you see what is available? Let’s go!). Same should be said about needing more diversity on draft - both style & countries - you could even offer beer pairings with menu items…
As for me, I’ll definitely be back later this year to see if I can raise my...
Read moreMy brother and I were both pretty big guys didn't even finish all the meat on our plate, that has never happened before. I asked for a beer recommendation from the bartender and asked him to pour a small glass instead he poured a large glass. Granted he offered to take it back and bring out a small glass but I told him it was all right as I trusted his recommendation. I took a sip of the beer and couldn't drink anymore of it as it was slightly better than some of the lower quality light American beers, then my brother took us up at the beer and couldn't drink it either so we handed it back to him before choosing different beers ourselves. They seem not to have the higher rated local beers and about 25% or more of their menu is Belgian beers which says a lot about what they think of the local beer culture. I know to expect unfriendly service and did not take it personally at local beer pubs in the area as the bartenders are more interested in speed and making sure you have what you need, and that's okay, but both of us came away with the feeling that the server didn't like as much to begin with and actively disliked us by the end of the meal. We were courteous about everything and polite and we didn't complain at all, we just told him we're interested in trying another beer when we're done sipping on the recommended beer, so I don't know why he would have treated us like he did. Definitely won't be returning for the food or the beer. We had much better elsewhere with very...
Read moreI went with my wife and a Spanish couple friend of ours to the bar. A waitress, half an hour before closing time came round and asked if we wanted anything else. We had beer in our glasses, so we didn't order. After a few minutes she came with the check, without asking if we actually wanted the check. When we tried to order one more round another waiter came by and said, in a violent tone, we were disrespectful since we had to have guessed they wanted to close (30 mins before the closing time) and that the waitress had come to our table twice. We asked for the manager and the waiter almost laughed at us. Finally, when the manager came around, without hearing our complaints, he supported the waiters behavior. In the meantime, the waiter kept arguing with our spanish friends in a violent tone. When our lady friend tried to pull out a phone to film the situation the waiter began to mouth nasting things about their home country. All of this, because we were trying to buy two more beers. I'm not spanish myself, but I felt sad about what they said to her. We paid and left. We were out, 20 minutes before closing time. We had passed unnoticed until that time. There was no reason to do this. There was no need to be mean with our friends. I'm a foreigner living in Prague and we are definitely not coming back again...
