Had read a lot of reviews of this place and when I realized it was right next to the hotel I had to go.
The (red) wine selection by the glass is pretty expansive. More weighted towards French and nicely enough not Bordeaux- as far as I remember only one from there. Otherwise there is even a wine from Jura which is so rare to find in wine bars outside of France. The second largest contingent is from Italy - again decently spread out including wines from Barolo, Chianti and Piemonte. Apart from this, there is a smattering of wines from Austria, Greece, Coratia and Spain. And this is only the wine by the glass list.
We had one Riesling (the ladies did), one red from Austria and another from France. This was my first ever red from Austria- and though it was a recommendation from the sommelier I was a bit underwhelmed. The second red was a Cote de Rhone- very nice. The ladies loved the Riesling.
Overall a nice place to go. You can sit outside and see the folks passing by. Good place to chill, observe and enjoy the day. The wine selection is exceptional. Only one niggle- the attitude of the person serving us. Don’t know how to pinpoint it but it wasn’t one which made you feel comfortable. We enjoyed despite him and not because of him. We stopped asking questions about the wine because of his demeanor. Still worth going- maybe he is not serving...
Read moreI visited the place with my friend where we entered and sat on a free table. After a while the waiter asked if we had booked a table. We said no and asked if it is ok that we sat there. He said that we should have informed them before entering but could still sit since there were no other bookings. We asked sorry for the inconvenience and said it was the first time we visited the place so we didn't know their system. Everything was ok though. After a while another guy came with an attitude saying again that we should have not just entered like this but we could now make an order. When we tried to excuse ourselves he tried to argue by saying that this is how it works in restaurants and we should know. I found the second comment unnecessary and rude since one explanation is enough for us to understand. Moreover it was a wine bar and usually you don't have to book a table there. So maybe they should consider making it a bit more clear either by having a sign at the entrance or some kind of reception. I believe the customer service was not acceptable since we didn't not feel welcome. It is a pity because the wine was very good and the food basic. I will definitely not visit the place again after...
Read moreA small, modern yet inviting space with an abundance of wine shelves, a charming French waiter, and apparently quite popular with the locals.
We started off with their ‘bitter salad’ with olives, Marcona almonds, pecorino, and I swear I detected a lil hint of anchovies in the dressing and grilled duck hearts with chimichurri bc DUCK HEARTS. They were so good we ordered another portion.
We then split the sweetbreads bc SWEETBREADS with ‘heart salad, crispy bread & watercress,’ which were good, but a bit skimpy on the sweetbreads. I’m also not fond of too much breading, and these were overwhelmed by it. Probably our least favorite dish.
The beef tartare, OTOH, was delightful, with pickled beech mushrooms, espelette, capers, and watercress.
Our final dish was the catch of the day, mullet with spring vegetables (wonderfully charred spring onions), mussels & mussel sauce.
All the sauces were sop-up-worthy, and I felt positively stuffed after all that food.
A bit of a splurge,...
