This restaurant is great, but I am giving it three stars because I think it's also quite overpriced and a bit pretentious. That said, the quality of the food is really excellent. The flavours of the dishes were impressively well developed and thought through, making the food tasty and creative. The atmosphere is also stylish and bustling (get a reservation on the weekend) However, this is a "tapas" restaurant, which they are upfront about in the beginning. We were told we should order 4-5 dishes. I found the menu very confusing and hard to follow because they don't really clarify what the dishes actually are, and they just list the ingredients. We ordered and had no idea what we were actually getting. Maybe some people think that is cute and chic, but I'm too old for that shiz. The wine menu was also written in a confusing fashion, and when I ordered I admitted that I didn't understand how they classified certain wines and was met with a subtly disdainful and pretentious remark from the server which ever so subtly insinuated that I am a low-brow, non-wine connoisseur plebeian of sorts. The fact is that the way they write their menu is just sort of confusing, so brace yourself for that. Back to the food, The dishes are indeed very very tiny. We went in as 2 adults and spent 70 euros to essentially have a snack and one drink each. Our entire order consisted of Two very small alcoholic drinks, three tiny snacks and one miniature piece of bread, and that all ran us about 70 bucks. I left rather unsatisfied and had to eat again at home. Hey, dining out in Helsinki is notoriously very expensive compared to the cities of other countries, and great quality and taste can also be hard to find...especially in the vegetarian world. This place is really paying attention to making great food. However, if you really want to hang out and enjoy the menu of great food and drinks for a proper dinner, prepare to spend 75 bucks per person. After living in other world cities, you kind of get used to getting ripped off in Helsinki both in reference to standards and pricing of food and drink, and the old familiar sting of that feeling rang true here. Basically, this restaurant has great food, but it's a bit pretentious and you need to be happy blowing a lot of cash for their tiny treasures. To each their own. But I was kind of disgruntled that for 70 bucks, all that you and a friend get is a drink and a snack. I felt a bit like fancy urban hipsters had pulled a fast one on me. Obviously, a lot of people like this place because it is good and sitting there may make you feel cool and spiffy, but I hope that this account from an international plebeian such as myself is helpful to those seeking a balanced review. I recommend that you DO go here to sample the fine eats and drinks, and are simply aware of what you are getting into: A very expensive, yet admittedly...
Read moreI would have given four stars if there would not have been few minor things. The food was great, very innovative and lovely to share with your friend or significant other etc. but it was perhaps little bit too salty. Also the salt rocks (I think) in the baked sweet potato were a little unnecessarry, or perhaps it was the size and amount of the saltrocks because they clearly standed out of the dish and littlebit overtook the taste, otherwise the sweet potato was great.
The service at the door was very welcoming, and fast concidering that the restaurant was almost full. The waitress that took our order was very nice, but maybe a little bit too pushy. We felt little uncomfortable ordering dishes because the waitress fussed about the sizes of the dish, but it was really a minor thing.
The atmosphere was lovely, especially I liked the open kitchen and the strong contrast between things, it was really refreshing. The music was good but it was little too loud, but we sat at the corner of the dining hall and the speakers were right next to us.
All together the experience was great and a refreshing. As I said I would have given 4 stars without the minor things I mentioned above. But I believe next time that we are going to visit it is going to be a 4 star experience, because three yes'ses we are...
Read moreOrdered two chef's menus, one with vegan options, one not. The first half of the menu was great. The rye cracker starters were especially nice. Halloumi fries lacked a bit of character, but were crisp and the garnishing was interesting and provided a nice contrast to the deep fried flavor. The flatbread and dips worked together well, I liked the crunchy bits a lot.
The second half of the menu couldn't meet the expectations the first half created. A long wait for any further courses (a garbled explanation for the wait was given, one would have expected a word earlier) and when they finally arrived, the flavors were all over the place. The sweet potato was nearly flavorless, while the spinach salad had crazy amounts of garlic and the vegan option sauce was overly salty. The black tahini compensated for the flat sweet potato somewhat. The best part of the non-vegan second half was the risotto, flavors were interesting and the consistency was a nice al dente. The dessert was acceptable. One star off for the second half performance.
The check was provided promptly.
The service was friendly, although inconsistent, with multiple persons. Only English from certain servers costs another star.
The menu card could use a bit bigger font, readability was left behind...
