Excellent location. I was able to walk everywhere and didn't need to use public transport. 10min walk to main train station. 10min tram to West Terminal 2. The building is beautiful with high ceilings and original features. I loved the old Baltic stoves (not in use) in the entrance and kitchen. The hostel was kept clean and other guests seemed respectful and cleaned up after themselves. It seemed like there were quite a lot of rooms but it never felt crowded or noisy. My 6-bed dorm room was quite small especially with the big table though this was only an issue when everyone was in the room moving around and doing things or had their cases open. There are no blackout blinds so bring an eye mask if staying in summer. The dorm was right next to the showers and I found them clean though the water pressure wasn't very good and the water temperature fluctuated. The bed wasn't the most comfortable but the sheets were clean and pretty cotton and the bed was made (I've found some hostels do not make the bed). I didn't have anyone in the bunk above me so cannot comment on how much the bunks sway when someone is climbing in/out but they seemed sturdy enough. Each bed had a lamp, plug socket and shelf for storing things. The kitchen was cosy and had comfortable armchairs. I didn't use it to cook but it seemed well-stocked with equipment. I stored some bits in the fridge and there was plenty of room. The kitchen is kept very clean and well managed. Recycling bins for every type of rubbish and an emphasis on being environmentally friendly which I really liked. All the toilets have hand soap and hand towels and spare loo rolls and these never ran out (you'd be surprised how these basics are not standard in some hostels). They have lots of tourist information including food and sauna recommendations, and leaflets/brochures plus a box where you can leave toiletries for others to use Overall I would recommend for a stay in Helsinki. It was very calm and I enjoyed my stay. The photos...
Read moreExcellent location and old building, old furniture. Definitely good choice for people who want to save money staying in the city center.
But beds are old, two stores, old towels and old furniture, used by a lot of people for many years. I stayed in room number 6, and you can hear everything in the corridor and behind the walls there, hear from your bed other guests talking behind the wall.
The private light in my bed didn't work so I asked to change the bed and had to take the second floor bed (my was on the first floor with broken light and no ability to read). After the guest from Germany left I tried to take her 1st floor bed (because no-one was going to repair my light) and the girl-administator seemed so tired of her work that said I "don't have to change so many beds". I paid 32 euro a night, 4 nights stay (124 euro).
LGBT-flag is at reception but the schedule with tourist events happening in the city is in the corner in the kitchen. If you don't use the kitchen you won't find it, so I have missed a lot of interesting events my first days. As for me as a tourist it is better to put the flag in the kitchen but tourist information about events nearby the reception entrance. I have asked about tourist information at reception on the first day I came but all I have got was the city map (which I also have in Google maps in my phone).
The kitchen is closed 23:00-5:00 so you can't even take a cup and drink water from the tap in the kitchen at 23:15.
No lift, 3d floor, but that is also because the building is old in the city center. I will stay in this hostel again if I do a transit and need to sleep nearby the busstation (10 minutes walk on...
Read moreThis hostel is up 3 flights of stairs, not sure how I missed that because it was in the information! Luckily I only had a back pack and suitcase.||I was greeted by a man when I arrived really nice, helpful and showed me to my room and where the loos, showers and kitchen were.||Free tea and coffee also, there is a “|free food cupboard and shelves in the fridge where you can leave your unwanted food.||Breakfast is 6€ which I felt was good considering out and about tea was 3:50€ by itself. I got tea, juice, toast, cheese, jam, butter you could also have cereal and tomato and cucumber.||My first night was the worst night sleep I have ever had in a hostel and nothing to do with the staff, in my female dorm of 6, one lady decided she was going to pack her suitcase very loudly at 03:45, when I asked her if she could be quieter or maybe she should of packed the night before she was very rude. I had just got to sleep and at 06:00 another lady took a phone call in the room.||I have stayed in a lot of hostels and people have always been quite considerate, from this I went to reception explained the situation to the 2 lovely ladies and thank goodness they had a double private room this included a TV which was an added bonus and night 2 I slept like I would in my own home.||This hostel is within walking distance to all museums that I wanted to see and to the train station.||The train from the airport to Helsinki was 4:10€ which included the tram, going back because I wanted to use my cash it was 4:50€ as I had to buy my ticket from the shop at the train station.||This hostel was clean, tidy and quiet, I would...
