Oh my where to start? Scam allert first, maybe? They pulled the oldest trick in the book and added an extra 14 eur drinks to our bill. Mistake, you might argue, but after experiencing the whole dinner theatrics and the fact that the lady knew a little too fast how much exactly she should give us back, I dont think it was a mistake.
Food was not bad but definitely highly overpriced. It's not worth the price at all. The wine list, too, we were hustled to take champagne. I live in Switzerland and travel a lot around France. This was a really heavy exaggeration compared to my usual experience. We said we need more time choosing since it's hard to pick something reasonable. And I don't mean cheap. I was ready to order champagne as long as it doesn't feel like a scam. The waiter proceeded to mock us. How come swiss people can't afford it. Then, he turned to other guest and started mocking us again, telling them, look, these people from Switzerland cannot afford our wines... something in that regard....
Then we were hustled to take the more expensive oysters, the 'cheaper' ones are not good, just salt and water, no taste, the waiter said. They were actually good. We didn't take the more expensive ones. There were few more offers to have extra this or that...
In the end, we were asked while paying if we also want to pay the tip. I mean, please enough with the hustling... are the employees in this restaurant paid based on how much extra they squeeze out of people? You already charge too much ... but to be fair, they were begging tips from everyone. Is it to embarrass guests who don't wanna leave the tip and have it said out loud in front of other guests? If I want to leave the tip I will, trying to squeeze it out of me won't make a difference.... We said no tip, that's why probably extra 23 EUR was added to our bill...
what a way to ruin a nice evening for someone...
longs story short: this is a classic tourist trap, there is load of nice restaurants you can enjoy even in Chamonix (probably not on the main pedestrian streets though) without the pretense like in Le Cap Horn
*EDIT: I must reply to the owner’s comments below because it is just one fantastic fabulation he came out with, although he is certainly not talking about us😊. Which basically just proves the BS this place is about.
I cannot imagine in what universe would waiter spend 55 minutes total at a table explaining the drinks and the menu: maybe singing it in a-capela while reciting every single ingredient of each meal&drink along with the full recipe?:D amazing imagination there, but it certainly didn’t happen with us.
Also our table was waited on by the male waiter so not sure who this mysterious she is. We certainly did not experience any shouting nor we disrespected anyone.
Furthermore, nowhere near in my review I said we were mocked by looks, I said we were mocked by actual words when the MALE waiter pointed at us and told to other guests look at these people …. Which doesn’t sound like a restaurant ‘’renowned for the excellency of the service’’ you are describing.
We have ordered once and did not change our order at all, hence your explanation why the bill had extras is overruled😊.
As to the offering ‘‘some drinks or items to prove our good faith’’, you had a chance when we mentioned that the bill is wrong, there was no offer in good faith at all and I am not the type of person nor do I have a need of running around questionable establishment asking for free stuff, especially after being ridiculed.
I am not very tolerant to BS especially not at this...
Read moreI rarely leave reviews and generally understand that service can be challenging when busy but the experience at cap horn was excellent and so very poor that I feel the need to share.
The food for all of us was delicious and well cooked.
They even brought out the kid menu almost immediately, which was great.
Sadly that is where the service however was unacceptable. It started off so well but we sat for roughly 30 mins after finishing our meals without anyone checking in or clearing our plates, no water, nothing.
After saying something to waiter, he rolled his eyes and said he'd be right with us but took another 10+ mins before coming over and then didn't even offer an apology for the delay. Even then, if he'd just made the effort to apologize for the delay and hurry up with our desserts. It took 15 minutes after we ordered desserts for them to arrive leaving us almost 45 to 50 minutes after finishing our meal before desserts arrived and with very little attention to service between that time.
Ultimately we were forced to ask for the manager who handled it well but it is very unfortunate for such an amazing meal to be so influenced by such a poor service experience.
So unfortunate for what otherwise could have a wonderful end to a fantastic day in chamonix
To make matters worse - after writing this and getting home.....the manager had offered a complementary drink for our next visit but we come to find it's just a card to advertise this and the other restaurants - perhaps an accident but just adds insult to the whole experience.
Again great food -...
