It was OK. Really.
But a small interaction/misunderstanding could have been avoided.
And my French isn't great, so somebody else might have had different interactions with the waiter in question.
While I ordered, a lunch "special" was mentioned to me (for a few euros more), for a total of 20 euros with dessert.
I hadn't seen the size of their portions so I chose to order "à la carte". I told the waiter that. He wasn't thrilled. But he let me.
I thought that I could decide later. And I did.
I ended up paying 11 euros for the same dessert everyone else got. They paid approx. 6 euros. And I paid 11.
And the problem is I only remembered him mentioning that on the bill, my dessert would have to appear under a different name, Vacherin. Without mentioning the price would go up.
I survived, obviously. And, yes, I'm writing it to vent.
But I wouldn't do that to other people and I just want you to know.
Later that winter, my French colleague, a smart, single, female individual, taught me a very useful expression.

Read moreInteresting and mixed experience. Entered an empty restaurant. Was not happy with the first table. So they put us away in an isolated corner. After we requested we change again they said they couldn’t move but they manage to find another table. After that everything went really well. Good banter with the people working there and really nice food. Good wine list and reasonably priced. The place didn’t fill up whilst we were there so I’m not sure what the issue was with moving us to a better table. Nonetheless, very much enjoyed the food and dining experience.
