Racist & islamaphobic. Glamorized on TikTok but fails to live up to even the most basic standards of hospitality.
From the moment we arrived, it was clear we weren't being treated equally. I asked for a table, and a staff member (East Asian-looking man) told us to wait "over there" because two parties were ahead of us. We stood aside but deliberately avoided the spot near the bins. Soon after, another group arrived and was inexplicably seated before us. When we raised this, we were told to go to the back of the line.
Eventually, the manager gave us a table. We were ready to order and sat with closed menus to signalise this for over 30 minutes. The seating wasn't even full, yet no one came to take our order. Meanwhile, families who arrived after us were already being served.
I flagged down a bald waiter with glasses to ask if we needed to order inside as noone was coming to take our order. He casually said the manager would take our order—this same manager who had already ignored us while serving others.
Assuming we had misunderstood the process, we went inside to order. The woman at the till asked whether we were dining in or taking away. When I explained that no waiter ever came to us, she dismissed the comment without even acknowledging it. Cold, unapologetic, and frankly uninterested.
I wanted to order regardless and try it out. Ordering and payment are handled by two separate people. I chose to take out given we were so unwelcomed, we'd rather take refuge on a bench outside. Upon payment, we were to be told that there’s a minimum €5 spend—something the woman didnt inform us of earlier.
Upon payment, the manager then pays attention to us and asks if we were dining in only because he wanted to give our table away.
This isn’t just bad service—it felt discriminatory. As a visibly Muslim, brown woman in hijab, the differential treatment was too consistent and too blatant to ignore. The indifference, the dismissiveness, and the preferential treatment of others made the whole experience feel isolating and frankly humiliating.
Carette might be "Instagrammable," but it masks a deeply unpleasant culture of selective hospitality. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone—especially those from marginalized communities. There are far better places in Paris where your humanity, time, and money are respected.

Little did we know, we saw the short line and my wife told us that “We’re standing in this”. I was not one to disagree and I was able to ask the waiter specifically to wait for an outdoor table. We got it immediately and we’re so excited to be able to experience Carette.
Now I usually despise hot chocolate and whipped cream. Whenever I’ve had it, it’s usually just a weird texture that doesn’t sort well with my palate. My wife basically demanded I get one to experience what it was like. “This is what everyone gets here, you have to get it”.
So we ordered a double hot chocolate, pan au chocolat & the set of 6 macaroons.
The food and drink took around 15-20 minutes to arrive after ordering. The wait though was worth every single second.
Every item we ordered was elite.
The best macaroons I’ve ever experienced were the 6 macaroon assortment at Carette. I’ve tried macaroons from multiple different countries, and there’s no beating these. The light crispy edges that crack under the smallest amount of pressure, leads to the introduction of the flavored cream. This then creates a texture where the now crushed exterior of the macaroons combines with the soft cream. This is where the macaroon’s flavor elevates to create a symphony among the taste buds.
Now remember how I hate hot chocolate? Yeah, we’ll I’ve just never had “non-sugar/non-preservative” hot chocolate.
The hot chocolate tasted upper echelon with every sip. The outlandishly large whipped cream they serve you takes the hot chocolate to insurmountable heights.
The pan au chocolat was not your standard pan au chocolat. It actually was not the most filled chocolate croissant, but it was fresh and well-prepared. The flaky croissant embodied a nice exterior color with tons of layers inside the soft, laminated dough. It was a marvel to look at, let alone eat.
Let’s keep it simple. I would fly back to France just to go back to Carette.

Read moreDidn’t have to queue for too long which was great as weather was dire. However, we were greeted by a very disgruntled rude and impatient waiter which didn’t start the experience off well. We asked for more time to order (he gave us literally 3 minutes from when we were seated) and we received the look of death followed by a huff. When he returned he asked if we were there for dessert only and again, a disgruntled longer huff and were told the only things available were macarons, 4 cake choices or crepes. He then went round one by one for us to place the order and then when he got to the 4th guest he showed his frustration again by commenting on why we just didn’t ask for the 4 hot chocolates in one go. Now, we would have done that at the start had we not been made to fee like naughty children when we we were first sat down. I think we were actually scared of him by that point and what he might say or do next.!!
As for the food, hot chocolate was delicious and the cream devine. 1000 times better than Angelina’s. The Macarons were ok, not the best but not awful, would have liked them lighter and more flavoursome. The crepes were nice, particularly the liquid chocolate on top. But the chocolate cake was claggy and dense and not nice and presented poorly. Actually, it literally was just planted on the plate with no presentation. It didn’t taste nice. Not rich and unctuous as one would expect from a luxury chocolate cake
We would go again for the hot chocolate but that’s about it. Maybe the savoury or pastries would be nicer but we got there at 7:45pm on a Saturday night and they pretty much ran out of everything sweet.
