Really underwhelming and irritating experience. Food was average, overpriced, and the staff would greatly benefit from some extra professionalism and basic food hygiene training. To start, the owner or manager’s chihuahua was free to roam in the restaurant (not a problem for me at all, I love dogs and if I had a restaurant, my dogs would be there too). However, the dog climbed up on the banquet with a customer and rather than asking if that was ok, the woman simply told the customer that the dog was well-behaved and that she had nothing to worry about. Alright, whatever. I had the unfortunate experience of being seated at the bar in front of the kitchen, where I could see the two cooks continuously eating with their hands while preparing food for others. I ended up ordering two overpriced hand rolls, one of which was incorrect. Upon seeing that it was the wrong order, the manager grabbed the hand roll off my plate to eat herself. She grabbed the one hand roll I had actually ordered, and when realizing that, put it back on my plate for me to eat and took the other. She then proceeded to eat the other, give the server a bite of it and complain about how it was way too salty. I asked them to make me a new hand roll since she picked it up with her hands but I’m almost certain the kitchen just gave me the same one that she had taken off my plate. I should have just left at that point, but I went on to order the tuna tartar. While the cooks were preparing it, in between eating, the manager made loud business phone calls in proximity for everyone to hear, and informed the staff that she had just raised the price of the tuna tartar that I had just ordered. Yes the decor is nice, yes they have a good Instagram, yes the waiter was relatively polite and pleasant, but there was just so much wrong with every other aspect of this place. There are plenty of great, authentic izakayas in Paris with high quality food and ingredients where they treat you like an actual guest. At Onii-San I really had the feeling I was squatting in...
Read moreHad high expectations coming to Onii-San at such a price point. The portion sizes were surprisingly smaller then expected, surprised to be served all dishes at separate times rather then all at ones like expected from an izakaya. The menu looked delicious but has a few disappointments. The unagi don: the unagi itself was delicious wish I had a larger piece. The ratio to rice amount was overwhelming with that the sauce poured over rice flooded the rice, very acidic. The udon was a lovely surprise, however I wonder if the mushrooms needed to be added at such large quantity? as they are very pungent with strong flavour, less wouldve complemented the light contrast with the cream. The caviar was lovely but I wonder if mentaiko would’ve been a better choice for such a flavour profile of a dish. The hand rolls were simple, good. The dessert wasn’t too sweet which was appreciate however wasn’t anything exceptional, deconstructed cheesecake esk like dessert. It was an enjoyable experience and Onii San definitely has quality ingredients I just wonder if those ingredients could be more thought out. I really enjoyed the fried tofu though, well done. The service staff is great. Would recommend for a...
Read moreMy wife and I visited Onni-San for the last dinner of a 1-week Paris trip. Our meal here was certainly the cherry to top our culinary exploration of the beautiful city.
Of all cuisines, Japanese is our favorite and we often seek out izakaya spots in different cities to see how the cuisine is interpreted across the world.
We had a spread of 6 dishes including Yellowtail and Toro Tamaki Handrolls, Roasted Shitake, Toro Sando, Roasted Sea Bream, and the Braised Wagyu. All dishes came from the kitchen beautifully plated and the flavors were well balanced from the umami of the wakame cream sauce in the Roasted Shitake to the delicate brightness of the ponzu shallot sauce in the Braised Wagyu dish - both of which were our favorite dishes of the night.
We were so grateful to have the opportunity to get a reservation one day ahead as it is a smaller establishment and gets filled quickly. The ambience is very cozy - dimly lit room with quirky little Japanese-themed decor throughout. The service staff were casual, friendly, and attentive.
Overall an A+ experience and I will definitely visit again next time...
