What a treat this experience was. I was visiting Paris for two days, so whittling down my list of places to eat was a task, and I’m so glad the Public House made the cut.
I dinned quite early which meant I was able to experience both atmospheres of the restaurant.
My waiter (didn’t catch a name, so sorry!) was so attentive and helpful with the menu, (and my lack of French) and was able to recommend a drink which I ended up loving (top tip; go for the St Germain Spritz!)
I had the mackerel rillette to start which had almost a horseradish heat/ spice to it, topped with pickled cucumbers which were divine.
I followed with the Dauphinoise pie on a bed of vibrant green parsley sauce. I’m not usually a big parsley fan, but I’m a fan of this sauce which was silky, a little salty and added some freshness to the rich pie. The pastry on the pie was like eating a croissant, a brioche and a pie at the same time, and the filling needs to also be sold as a side because I couldn’t get enough. Even the dressing on the side salad was sensational, a silky, buttery, vinegar dressing.
I finished with the Apple pie, which I was expecting to be similar to tarte tatin but instead it was this beautiful, simple pastry pie filled with tangy cooked apples, on a bed of custard (another thing I usually don’t reach for).
The restaurant itself is beautiful in decor, and there was a great mix of guests, from business people to couples on date night, which shows how versatile yet special the place is. By the time I’d finished, the place was packed and sadly lots of people had to be turned away.
I would thoroughly recommend dining here, and I’m so glad I was able to...
Read moreAs a fan of chef Callum, whom we met in a cooking workshop, and having made several of his recipes from his book The Pie Room, this restaurant was a must visit for us. It was very interesting to try the pies and compare to my home cooking. The food did not disappoint, albeit having a Scotch egg and sharing two pies for lunch was a bit heavy. The pie crust was perfect, crunchy and flaky and with a creamy buttery taste. The vegetarian pie could have been seasoned a bit more, but with salt and pepper mill on the table that was easily fixed. My secret sin the scottish egg was possibly the finest i ever had, and the star on the otherwise pretty French looking menu of this very popular establishment. Although the interior looked quirky to me, including dark timber, colored tiles and thick carpets, the buzz of a very diverse croud made sitting here for a few hours an interesting experience. The service was unfortunately disappointing. Although the staff worked hard, they repeatedly failed to wait our table, although the waitresses promised to come back in a minute. Being seated and then waiting 20 mins to order first drinks, and having to walk up to the till to be able to finally pay are two red flags in my book, and added to the frustration of the generally slow service. Still this did not spoil the fun for us and being able to check this off our list of go to places was one of the highlights of our latest culinary adventure in la...
Read moreI took my best friend here today for dinner, made a dinner reservation in advance requesting a nice table upstairs by the window. Upon arrival we were barely greeted by a rude staff and were seated at a table that was cramped between the window and the booth and had barely any room for us to sit without our legs rubbing against one another.
The service was by far the worst service I have ever experienced in any restaurant be it in London or in Paris. We ordered the half chicken and the English cheese platter with just the two cheeses and fries along with our drinks. We received a French cheese platter fit for 4 people at least, never got the chicken served and we kept waiting for la carafe d’eau for 2 hours (7:30pm to 9:30pm) before I finally asked a different waitress for the water. But somehow that’s not even the worst part, because minutes later we noticed the first waitress rudely pointing at us and whispering something to the other one, and that really killed it for us. And of course, after this terrible experience, we had to tip them. It’s a shame that with all that investment on interiors and presumably decent food, they couldn’t see the need to hire professionals and invest in...
