We came here a couple of years ago. It was in May. The restaurant was full to the rafters. Parisiennes and tourists sitting shoulder to shoulder coiffing wine and gorging on pizza without a care in the world. There was a pizzaiolo throwing the dough around. There was spectacle. A natural buzz about the place. And the pizza was mouth smackingly good. Neapolitan style.
Things have changed sadly. Granted we were visiting again in winter so you’d expect a little less atmosphere but not so much as a smile from literally any of the staff. The pizzaiolo had gone. It literally felt like we were in a funeral home. The pizza arrived tepid. Despite the counter being 10ft away. The dough was anaemic. The mozzarella had almost solidified. An Italian would have been mortified. If you have a wood-fired pizza oven the pizza has to arrive steaming, the cheese molten and there needs to be char. There is a fine line between char and burnt and it was clear whomever was cooking the pizza didn’t have the cojones to go anywhere near this line. Hence the lacklustre attempt that arrived at our table. We sent half of each pizza back to get them warmed up properly!!
I’m perhaps more scathing than I should be but we’d been to this place at its peak so the regression hurt both our taste buds and our pocket. You could see others had been lured to this place by previous reviews. They all looked as disappointed as we were.
Oh and one other thing. If you’re giving out a basket of baked dough pieces as something to chew on, please don’t throw the uneaten pieces back into the communal bowl, to then be sent out again to other...
Read moreI wouldn't recommend this place to anybody. Despite the food being okay (pizza was tasty, the salad was bad - the person making the salad didn't even bother to cut the lettuce so that it could fit in the mouth, and all the ingredients were just thrown in the plate and served to us like that) , the service was honestly terrible! They all acted like they were doing you a favour to reply to you/serve you, they didn't even bring us plates to eat the salad and when we asked they said that the pizza is on the way and we don't need another plate. But that wasn't even the worst part. Covid prevention measures are literally NON existent. The place was extremely overcrowded inside, no one from the staff was wearing masks -not even the cooks- , tables had like 30 cm distance from one another AND NOONE WAS ASKING FOR COVID CERTIFICATES (the famous pass sanitaire - as it is obligatory in france in order to sit indoors-). This is truly unacceptable especially when you allow an insane amount of people indoors! You have to at least be considerate enough to follow health measures!!! Very very disappointed. i would never go back. There are other restaurants that actually respect their customers and deserve your money! It's a...
Read moreThis used to be another Italian restaurant, but new ownership has refurbished the decor and simplified and modernized the menu. The result is a bright and busy place near a major Paris landmark (Les Halles). The star is pizza here, cooked in a big pizza oven near the front door. You can find cheaper pizzas in Paris but the Pizza's at Uno seem to have a lot of good ingredients piled on them and I don't think they're unreasonable in price. The rest of the menu is limited, but it does have some tasty choices. Make sure you ask about the special if you're there at lunch (usually they are really good, a little unusual, and reasonably priced for what you get - I wish they'd put some of the special dishes on the regular menu). Most of the staff speaks English and they are very friendly. Uno can get busy on a Friday or Saturday night, so call ahead if you visit on these nights. Post-pandemic update: I was happy to see that the food and service at Uno is unchanged. The menu has changed slightly, but the pastas and pizzas remain...
