Postwagen Zum Ratskeller — Restaurant in Aachen

We believe this restaurant shares its kitchen and staff with the Postwagen, where we tried to eat first but with no success as we were “forgotten” upstairs… We then decided to try Ratskeller, as the menu was appealing and the other restaurants nearby seemed to offer mainly fast-food. The food was overall very good, although I wasn’t too fond of the pheasant (but the poached pear and oysters as entrées were both good, and the cod as well). The only problem was, again, the service. The restaurant didn’t seem very big, and although we saw at least 5 people working there (including the same lady that was at the other restaurant), everything took a long time (just bringing the menu and taking our order took around 30 minutes, and when we finished ordering our dinner, we were asked if we wanted the wine list, even though the very last thing we asked for was a bottle of a Chardonnay… 🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️ oh, and the bottle didn’t come, just a glass, but that’s ok). We also noticed that some other people that were already there seemed to wait a long time for their dishes as well. The staff was friendly and they spoke English and French, which was a plus, but the service was a little underwhelming especially since we were already hungry from our wait at the Postwagen. After being assigned a table we noticed food service was very slow only drinks came fast, our main dish ordered at 19:30 just never arrived.

After our first complain at 20:30 we got our starters to be served at 21:00.

After two more unsuccessful complains between 21:30 and 22:00 we cancelled our order as we all considered it was ridiculous to wait from 19:30 until 22:00 sited on a table without our main dish.

Finally when paying our bill at 22:00 (of course drinks plus starter only) we did not get an apology or explanation.

Even though the place looks amazing there are other restaurants with good service in the sorroundings.

Ein wahrlich historischer Platz! Der Aachener Ratskeller befindet sich im Keller des Rathauses, das im 14. Jahrhundert auf den Fundamenten der ehemaligen Kaiserpfalz Karls des Großen errichtet wurde. Der gotische Keller diente damals ursprünglich als Lagerraum für Nahrungsmittel und als Weinkeller. Erstmals als öffentliches Lokal mit einem historischen Flair und gutbürgerlicher Küche wurde der Ratskeller 1951 eröffnet. Die Lage im historischen Zentrum Aachens war ideal! Im Verlaufe der letzten 7 Jahrzehnte hatte sich zwar das Design und auch das kulinarische Rezept des Restaurants mit dem Wechsel der Besitzer immer gewandelt, behielt aber trotzdem den historischen Charakter eines Gewölbekellers mit mittelalterlichem Charme. Nach längerer Schließung wurde der Ratskeller unter dem Namen -„ Ratskeller Aachen - Restaurant & Bar“ im Oktober 2022 wieder eröffnet. Entsprechend der Tradition des Ratskellers mit seinen dicken Gewölbemauern bleibt die Atmosphäre zwar weiterhin historisch, jedoch findet sich jetzt ein interessanter Mix aus stilvoller Beleuchtung und moderner Inneneinrichtung in mittelalterlichem Gewölbe, was meines Erachtens sehr gelungen ist. Dazu paßt auch das moderne Konzept, das eine moderne Bistroküche mit regionalen Produkten und variantenreicher Getränkeauswahl, sowie eine Cocktailbar hat. Es gibt reichlich Platz mit vielen gemütlichen Nischen für ein trautes atmosphärisches Dinner zu zweit, aber auch größere Tische für Gruppen. In der warmen Jahreszeit kann man auch draußen auf dem Katschhof mit Blick auf den Aachener Dom genießen. Wer eine hervorragende Küche in einem historischen, aber auch zeitgemäßen gemütlichen Ambiente und sehr guten und freundlichen Service im schönen Zentrum von Aachen sucht, der ist hier genau richtig!
