We decided to try this restaurant last night for the first time because we were both really craving a proper Indian curry. To start with the girl who took our order was evidently new because she didn’t know what a Radler was(!) this is basic. I don’t mind that she’s new and young, everybody has to start somewhere with their first job. But as a manager or a supervisor do not let your second day on the job newbie go to take an order on their own when they haven’t even been trained in the menu, when they don’t actually know what drinks are on offer, when they don’t know the dishes on the menu, when they don’t know that rice comes with some dishes and just let us order three portions of rice, which was not checked over by another member of staff. This is not a problem with your new employee. This is a massive problem with training your staff.
Secondly, do not order the Papadom’s as the selection of chutney is massively underwhelming. The Indian I go to in England (Jamdani in Whickham) serve Papadom’s with a really nice selection of dips and chutneys. Here the dips came - a green slime that tasted like sick, and I think the other one was tomato, ketchup, and barbecue sauce mixed together. No chopped onion, no yoghurt and mint, no mango chutney, nothing explained. I chose not to complain about this but I had read mixed previous reviews, and wanted to see for myself as I hoped they would have improved this - this is basic for an Indian restaurant. I guess they tried to Germanize it to appeal to people here, but actually it just makes it terrible.
I’ve had many butter chickens in many different countries, and the one yesterday was very underwhelming. It tasted OK but was way too sweet. Again, I guess they add more sugar thinking they appeal to a local audience, which is a pity.
The chai tea was good , and the bill was reasonable for how much food we had.
My biggest complaint is that one of the staff members marched out the new girl to our table to apologies for her inadequate service. She is new, and therefore the failure comes from the experienced members of staff and the lack of training given. Marching the new girl to our table to make her feel belittled is completely not necessary or acceptable. You should have more humanity in this respect. PS I don’t appreciate being told that cheese is a traditional topping on an authentic Indian Peshwari Naan. All of the recipes on Google look way better than what we were served - a totally flat, heavy bread covered with cheese and fried flat. Fresh authentic Indian food tastes great, unfortunately they seem to adapt...
Read moreThis Indian restaurant in Berlin is the perfect place to experience authentic Indian cuisine. As an Indian myself, I often avoid Indian restaurants in Berlin because they tend to be heavily Germanized, with little resemblance to true Indian flavors and dishes.
But thanks to Anand, I have finally found a place where I can enjoy delicious and comforting Indian food. Their menu is extensive, offering a wide variety of options including chaat, South Indian dishes, North Indian dishes, and sweets.
I have visited this restaurant several times, and one dish that I always order as an appetizer is the Madras Rasam. It has a unique and pleasant flavor that sets it apart from traditional rasam. It has a shorba-like taste and is the perfect way to start my meal.
My absolute favorites here are the Aloo Paratha and Chole Bathure. They are authentic and taste amazing.
To end the meal on a sweet note, they offer a variety of sweets to choose from. Their Masala Chaas is one of the best I have ever had. It is a refreshing drink that perfectly complements the meal, especially during the summer when it quenches your thirst.
The staff at this restaurant is incredibly friendly and welcoming. They go out of their way to ensure a pleasant dining experience.
In addition to their regular menu, they also offer a buffet every day, with both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options. This buffet is a great value for the money, allowing you to try a variety of dishes.
Overall, Anand is my go-to Indian restaurant in Berlin. It provides an authentic Indian dining experience with a rich and diverse menu, friendly staff, and great...
Read moreUnfriendly, rude and impolite staff (racist too)! We were a group of 4 Indians, seated next to German customers on either side of our table. Open seeing the people next to us munching papadam with assorted chutneys, we asked if we could get some papadam as well. The attendant rolled his eyes and his body language was extremely rude as if we asked for gold. During the course of the evening, he did exchange smiles with the German customers. When our food arrived, he gave (not serve) it to us in a manner where he was doing us a favour by serving us. Again,he didn't say much, but his body language said it all. The same rude behaviour continued while he cleared our table. this 'second class' treatment by a fellow countryman left a bad flavour in our palate. This is only my third visit to this restaurant in 5 years. Our behaviour now or in the past definitely didn't warrant such treatment.
One of our friends mentioned that the restaurant staff prefer 'white clients' over Indians as they tip better. This got me wondering if the service be based on tips? The attendant didn't even give us a chance. Unlike In the US where the salary of a waiter depends on the tips he /she makes, German labour laws ensure otherwise. If tips are a requirement for being treated equally, they should just put a sign outside the restaurant stating' no tips, no service.' Having been to many restaurants in Berlin both cheap eats and up scale ones, never have we been treated differently from other customers (even by German...
