Ständige Vertretung — Restaurant in Berlin

The restaurant Ständige Vertretung is a Berliner institution located in the city center. In this restaurant the walls are full of German politicians, and its name "Ständige Vertretung" refers to the political decision of the reunited Germany after the fall of the Berlin Wall, to move the German capital from Bonn in Rheinland to Berlin back in the 1990ies. So the owners of this restaurant decided to cope with the new situation by moving with many thousands of politicians from their hometown Bonn in Rheinland and establish a "Ständige Vertretung", a "constant consulate" in Berlin, the new capital of the BRD (FRG), in order to preserve and propagate the Rheinland culture in Berlin. So the Ständige Vertretung has been in Berlin since the late 1990ies and since then it has been a special restaurant institution in the minds of many Berliners. The artsy walls full of pictures of important figures of the German public as well as the whole interior is very colorful and impressive. The staff is very friendly and the food is super-delicious and authentic. So when you are fond of authentic German food in a historic, artsy and colorful interior, this restaurant institution is the right place for you.

We had the Kasseler Braten, a smoked pork chop with Sauerkraut and fried potatoes, a traditional dish from Kassel, a town in the center of Germany. And additionally we had 'Himmel un Ääd', the so-called most popular Rheinland dish, a dish with grilled black pudding (sausage), mashed potatoes, sautéed onions and apple compote. Our dishes we enjoyed with the traditional Gaffel Kölsch, a typical beer from Cologne. But here at the Ständige Vertretung you also can get plenty of other dishes such as Flammkuchen, a Tarte flambée, this traditional dish from the Alsace. When you are in Berlin this place is a must see!

As I entered Ständige Vertretung in the heart of Berlin, I was immediately enveloped in the warm and welcoming ambiance of a traditional German eatery. The rustic wooden decor, complete with long communal tables and dimly lit lanterns, transported me to a bygone era.

Seated by the window, I perused the extensive menu, filled with quintessential German dishes. Unable to resist, I started with a hearty bowl of potato soup, perfectly seasoned with herbs and served with crusty bread. It was the ideal comfort food for the crisp Berlin evening.

For the main course, I opted for the restaurant's signature dish, a generous serving of Sauerbraten. The tender marinated pot roast, served with a velvety potato dumpling and tangy red cabbage, was a flavor explosion that brought me closer to the heart of German cuisine.

Of course, no German meal would be complete without a refreshing beverage. I chose a local Berliner Weisse to accompany my meal, and its crisp, slightly sour taste complemented the rich flavors of the food impeccably.

To finish the evening, I indulged in a slice of Black Forest Cake, a decadent dessert that showcased the restaurant's commitment to tradition. The layers of chocolate cake, whipped cream, and cherries were a delightful conclusion to a truly authentic German dining experience.

First time coming back to Germany after 9 years and when I saw kölsches Bier, my eyes shined, Köln was my home for 3 years. Decided to go in. I'm pretty sure the food would have been great because a lot of people were enjoying their moment, but had a difference experience.

Just as I entered, nobody attended us, but after a while a young gentleman answered us and we asked for a table for 2. He answered "just pick whatever table you want". My girlfriend then started going to a table.

That was when an older sir started yelling "Hallo" for 5 or 6 times towards her like she was doing something wrong. He didn't see me or the young gentleman as we tried to explain that this was our instruction, not to wait to be seated.

That was when I heard between his teeth something like "diese Leute". My German is intermediate but I know the meaning of it, and it's more than just those 2 words. I decided to leave.

The thing is, seeing all the reviews here, this seems to be a really good restaurant. I think I just caught someone on a bad day and I really hope this is was a once in a lifetime situation. Never had any kind of treatment like this in the years I've lived here and I'd not like that someone feels the way I felt there today.
