The Barn Café Rosenthaler Platz — Restaurant in Berlin

Yes, I ate here and yes, I enjoyed it, more or less. But the reason I am leaving this review is for the purposes of a... time-bending call-to-action, if you will. In around 2015 a Barn-ification of Berlin took place, don't deny it. Adopting a certain Australian coffeehouse aesthetic (people are yet to catch up on Melbourne's cultural destruction of the world), this novel café began cropping up in all the usual places. If I had had the wherewithal to, I would have come up with a barnometer that measured the barniness of certain areas in the city, that is to say, areas that were rife for a Barn to open. It is something you can literally tell in the air, not dissimilar to the weather. Rosenthaler Platz was due for a Barn. Savignyplatz, my everlasting love, will have to reckon with a Barn soon, against my better wishes. Voltastraße was a zag, I'll give it to the barnsters, nobody saw that one...

Dishes (- negative / = ok / + positive): good espresso: rather on the acidic side with a nice fresh citric flavor, so I need to add sugar to balance the taste; likely goes well with cappuccino where the milk balances the acidity free tap water

Service: friendly service = asked the waiter to clean my table, but to be honest I also jumped into the seat as soon as another guest left

Price: higher priced espresso at €2.9 for Berlin

Atmosphere: modern nice coffee shop interior with matching relaxed music clean good chain alternative to the big US competitor weak WiFi

i’ve been to a different location and the atmosphere is nice, however at this location i asked them to put a shot of espresso into a hot chocolate and they said they would not do that for me. i would only have to order them separately and do it myself. i want the mocha to mix with the coffee directly- doing this after the milk is added is not as effective.

i find this really pretentious as any good coffee shop should have their flavor of coffee and milk stand up to their chocolate. i drink this to gage skill and style of the baristas. maybe they need to select a better chocolate? or take better care with the espresso shots?

you don’t need this in your life. there are plenty of places that will make an adult hot chocolate and have good coffee. this is a fun city- we don’t need this pretentiousness,...
