It could be great, but wasn't.
The bread, dips, panipuri and aubergine carpaccio were delicious, but too many flavours battling it out made for a very rich and heavy start to the meal.
After a long wait (40+ mins) and with one the starters being delivered again in compensation (a gift from the restaurant), the mains arrived.
So, what's worse than a plate of couscous for 30 Couscous that tastes like sweet, vanilla soy milk with dollops of different super spicy sauces and a few vegetables thrown lovelessly on top. Such an overwhelming combination of intense flavours exploding on one average looking plate without an inch of finesse or anything special that would justify the eye-watering price.
My dinner date didn't manage to finish their plate, again too rich and too many overwhelming flavours for the stomach to deal with.
It's a beautiful location, it really is. The menu, although confusing (vegetarian options duplicated in the starter section and unclear about sizes), reads promisingly. What's weird is that, as you enter the restaurant the waiting staff are overly attentive. Then as the evening progresses, they just disappear. Not once were we asked if we would like more drinks and empty plates sat for a long time.
All in all a pricey experience ā ca. 180 EUR for 2 mains, 2 starters, 3 cocktails and 2 glasses of wine (only 1 dish with seafood, the rest vegetarian) ā and my stomach was turning when we left.
Glimmers of greatness, but a lot of work to be done on refining the menu and getting the waiting staff working together as a high-end...
Read moreI came here with two Israeli friends with very high expectations and anticipation, but did not leave here with that wow feeling. The restaurant is located next and as part of the hotel which is nice. The ambient and decor is very modern and inviting. You have a person who receives you and takes you to your table. You pass by the bar which looked fantastic. The kitchen is open in the middle of the restaurant which makes the whole place lively. I was told all cooks were from Israel. Most of the waiters are also from Israel so English is the main spoken language. The staff is friendly but I would not say at the professional or efficiency level I expect from such restaurant. They were slow at times and forgot orders. We ordered almost all appetizers, which gave us a good impression of the variety of tastes and dishes. The dishes are well presented and the portions are good. The main dishes are average of 35⬠were good as well. The wines were ok. One should come to Layla at least once to celebrate a special occasion. There is a side almost separate room for a bigger group. Kitchen closes around 22:30. Cash or credit cards are accepted. The place is wheelchair friendly. The restrooms are those of the hotel and one can reach them by the elevators. There is WiFi and Garderobe for coats. If you do not want to take cab or drive, the restaurant is a few minutes walk from The...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreA very nice option if you want to have modernized Middle Eastern food (Israeli / Lebanese / Persian), fancily presented and somewhat expensive and served rather informally in a modern room. Itās modern Israel dining for you really. The only caveat is if you already know the chefs food in which case you have to be ready that most of the dishes have been around for a long time.
Chef Meir Adoni has always been a master of making simple food look properly nice and upgrading it to fancy, somewhat sweet and spicy versions. His Kubaneh with paprika, tomato and zhugh has always been great and the smoked eggplant carpaccio a hit for at least a decade now. The Israeli ceviche adds middle eastern warmth and sweetness to the usual taste. The quatayef is a more serious and homey stuffed pancake affair. The mains are beautifully executed no matter whether itās cauliflower, fish, or lamb, I prefer the cauliflower personally and generally thereās less surprises here and more of great execution. The deserts are inventive and not too heavy, just the way I like them.
I guess my only criticism given how many of chef Adonis restaurants have served very similar dishes in several countries all over, I would much rather have him keep his Tel Aviv restaurant open and make it into an...
