Hotel is in a good central location and basic rooms for what you pay! Wouldn’t say it was a 4 star hotel but it does the job and we have been here a couple of times now! However, never again the service we received from one member of staff at reception has left a sour taste in our mouths! The micro aggression, the sheer misery she showed in serving customers or just putting a smile on her face! There was a group of 10 of us that came back to the hotel to have some drinks after a bitterly cold day. One of the group went up to order the drinks, however she wanted all of us to go up there individually. When asked why she wanted us to do that she shouted with a glare this bar is self service. We didn’t ask her to come to the table, one of the group was up their ordering. She hesitantly took our drink order with a lot of moaning telling us that this bar isn’t set up to serve this amount of people! When she finally served our drinks. She told my friend she would have to wait to get the bill aggressively as she needed to be on reception (there were no other guests at this point). We then decided to have another drink. However, the slamming down of things, telling us there was no glasses for a drinks. My friend said there was no need to be slamming things down which she didn’t like and then starting speaking in German under her breath. The final straw was when I went over to get some of the “free” sweets they have out at reception she followed me to see what I was doing like a was a criminal for wanting some sweets. On my way up to bed, I asked her if her manager would be in tomorrow and what time. The attitude I then got was absolutely disgusting and disrespectful. She will be in tomorrow when you check out no I won’t give you her name it will be on her name badge tomorrow. I then had enough with her attitude and finger pointing. I finally asked for the managers email address and she slammed her business card on the table. She then proceeding to call me a liar and I asked for table service which we never did. One person went up to order and was putting it on their room. At no point did we want her to come and serve us. She wasn’t a happy, friendly lady and maybe should look for another career outside hospitality as customer service and guests are not a strong point of hers! I left to go up to my room after sending an email to the manager and she again mutter under her breath and moaned that she had to collect glasses of the table! We come to Berlin every year and we have stayed here before but I won’t again after this experience. She did not like us and I am not sure if that was because we was English but my whole group felt extremely disrespected...
Read moreThe location is NOT Potsdamer Platz but the border of Kreuzberg, ca. 2km from Potsdamer Platz. However, there are two subway stations 500-800 meters (10-15 minutes on foot) from the hotel, that offer good connectivity to the city center.
The rooms are very clean and the beds are comfortable and the bathrooms clean and modern. The amenities are barely acceptable, however. There is no room for your clothes: not one single drawer or shelf. There is an open closet (no door) with a bar from which you can hang your shirts and above the bar (so above your head level) one single shelf where you could place your t-shirts, underwear, pullovers and so on.
The room has a kettle with a couple of tea bags and single-doses of instant coffee, at no charge. No espresso machine. Iron and ironing board will be brought to your room on request.
There is no room service, but there is a fridge next to reception with bottled water, soft drinks and a packed ham and cheese sandwich that you can buy if you’re hungry in the evening.
The breakfast buffet is ok, not with huge variety and rather below the usual NH hotels level. But you have bread rolls, ham and cheese slices, scrambled eggs and some pastry with marmalade as well as some fruit and yoghurt and juices. So you won’t be hungry!
Overall the hotel is a mid-level hotel, based on NH hotels standards (I have stayed in more than a few NH hotels all around Germany, they are my preferred 4-star brand) but on the other hand its prices are also slightly below the average NH hotel price, so that compensates.
There is a small underground parking but with very limited space (so if you have a big car you will need to maneuver quite a bit to fit in the parking spaces) and only a few parking spots available. No booking is possible, it’s first come, first serve; so if you leave your space in the morning, there is no guarantee you will find a space available when you return in the afternoon.
The surroundings are definitely not central or premium and in the evening it is rather dark and isolated (although there is another branded hotel next door and a big supermarket across the street that stays open until late and attracts the occasional dodgy patron who will loiter outside drinking beer and chatting.) It’s not that I felt unsafe, though.
Overall, I would say it’s a rather acceptable four-star hotel with no frills but good...
Read moreThe Good stuff: Excellent value for money Location Lifts (2 working, reliable lifts you do not have to wait too long for them) Dining area (good space, quality furniture - not some cheap, light chairs and tables) Extensive TV channel offering - although many did not appear to work. Room has a very good size for a couple and amenities such as minibar. The Spanish woman clerk at the front-desk was extremely friendly and chatty to us at check-in - not that we need to have a small talk to hotel employees during our stay but she was clearly very welcoming and gave us a good vibe of the place.
The not so good stuff: No soundproofing rooms - inevitably hearing an excessive amount of noise late night from the adjacent rooms, corridor and upstairs - worst at weekends when partygoers tend to arrive/leave their room on the early morning. Glass bathroom door with barely no acoustic isolation - not a very romantic experience when you a sharing a room with your partner and due to the lack of proper isolation between toilet and room, it is quite easy to listen to one's "bowel movements". Subpar cleaning - the floor was essentially not swept not even once in a 5 night stay - under the bed the situation was pretty bad; the amount of dust, hair and whatnot was incredibly huge even though the area is easily accessible - you do not need a special broom or whatever to clean under the beds. Used glasses were not changed meaning you have to rely on hand soup to reuse glasses. The cleaning process to the eyes of the hotel == do the bed; change towels (if needed) and...
