Quintessence:
The food was very delicious and all the ingredients were fresh. The food is a bit pricey, but it's definitely worth the money. The majority of the waiters/waitresses were very hard-working and polite. The restaurant itself has a lot of tables and since it's a vast room it can get very noisy when all tables are occupied and everybody starts to speak. After having Korean BBQ your clothes will obviously smell.
In detail:
My friends and I went to Hanmi on a Friday evening at 6 pm ish. Since we had made a reservation we did not have to wait. I'd say fifty percent of the tables were occupied, when we entered. When we left though, the restaurant was fully occupied.
We ordered lychee spritzers, and a mezzo mix. In addition we ordered the Yatsche Mandu (dumplings filled with vegetables and glass noodles, either deep fried or steamed), the Se Uh Mandu (dumplings filled with prawns, either deep fried or steamed), and the Hemul Padjon (Korean pancake with seafood, zucchini, and spring onions) as entrees. For our main course we decided to have Korean BBQ. We ordered the So Bulgogi (marinated slices of rump steak) and the Desi Bulgogi (marinated pork shoulder).
That day a waitress took our order. She probably does not speak Korean. Her pronunciation of the dishes we ordered was not very good. Her German was good though. All in all I did not like the way she was working. She kind of messed up our orders. Instead of lychee spritzers we got passion fruit spritzers and she forgot our Hemul Padjon. Moreover she made too much small talk with other guests. The food runners on the other hand were really hard-working, and very polite.
So first we got our drinks and noticed the orange colour of our spritzers. We told our food runner that we ordered lychee spritzers and without any further questions he went back to the bar and got us the right drinks. After a short while we got served our Yatsche and Se Uh Mandus (we decided to have the deep fried version). Both dishes were very delicious and very crispy. I personally preferred the Yatsche Mandus (vegetarian) over the Se Uh Mandus (prawns), but would order both versions again nonetheless. After finishing these entrees we thought they'd serve us our Hemul Padjon, but instead everything was prepared for our main course. We got served our side dishes (Kimchi, etc.), the meat, and the food runner brought a gas cartridge for the grill. So we asked our food runner if they would still serve us the Hemul Padjon that we ordered. She went back and asked the waitress who took our order to come back to us. The waitress made excuses and said something was wrong with our table. She tried to blame it on the chefs that we didn't get our Hemul Padjon and asked us if we still wanted to have it. We obviously said yes and got it not long after. So the Hemul Padjon was very nice as always and our Korean BBQ dishes were very delicious as well.
One thing I do not like about Hanmi is that they charge you for an extra bowl of rice if for example you're in the restaurant as three guests but only order two portions for the BBQ. So if you order a lot of entrees you should definitely order one portion less for your BBQ, because otherwise it's just too much (the Hemul Padjon for example is smaller now than back at their old place close to the university of Hamburg, but it is still a lot for an entree). Or just skip the entrees altogether and only order main dishes.
Overall I like the design of their restaurant. Of course it is a vast room and it gets very loud when everyone starts to speak, but I personally did not...
Read moreThis is a review by Korean person. On 9 August 2020 my partner and I wanted to eat Korean BBQ in Hamburg. We picked restaurant Han-Mi because of its proximity to our hotel. We made a reservation around 5pm for dinner at 8:30pm. We arrived 10min too early and were greeted by the staff who brought us from the main area to our table in a smaller side room which was very hot, badly ventilated and already quite full. Immediately we both felt that it would be an unpleasant BBQ experience if we stayed at this table in the small room, so we decided to ask the staff for a table in the main hall because when we came in we saw several empty BBQ tables in the main room. However, the staff could not grant our request. Their reason was that all BBQ tables had already been given to other guests that had made reservations. After some discussion the staff offered to seat us in the main (and much better ventilated / cooler area) but only at a regular table where we could not have the BBQ. Because eating in the small warm room was not an option, we accepted their offer for a regular table. What followed was a just acceptable food experience (6 out of 10 in terms of taste overall, seafood pancake and bibimbap were fine, nangmyun should be avoided since it was super bland and tasteless, bossam was ok but the spicy sauce including oyster was a tad too fishy), which was brought further down by the fact that we counted at least 6 empty BBQ tables in the area where we were seated and several empty normal tables that never got filled. Despite that the staff tried to offer an explanation and apologized, the underwhelming taste of the food and the unsatisfying customer experience made Han-Mi a bad experience that we cannot recommend to anyone. We hope that they would improve on their service and food quality by e.g. removing nangmyun from their menu or improving this dish, or providing practical solution to the dissatisfaction of customers (for example suggesting us to wait 15 min for a BBQ table in the hall or logically giving priority to people who arrive first, or not accepting payment for...
Read moreThe food was really good, but for how much we spend per person on this restaurant, we expected something better in another aspect as well.
Let's talk about the grilled food. There is nothing to complain here. If you're simple come for a good korean food, you're going to be happy here. Don't order beef if you want a seems big portion. You can order the rice and side dishes as many time you like! Especially if you want to make your money worth! We ordered 3 times and were really full in the end.
And for the dessert we ordered something with "snow ice" in the name but with the black bean topping instead of manggo. The black bean is supposed to be the more authentic version. There is nothing wrong with any topping you choose. I wanted to talk abot the ice here. It is quite a weird experience for us. The ice did not easily melt on tounge just like any ice you ever tried, especially if they have shaved the ice and increasing their surface area. It tasted a powdered dust, but in a good way. If you expect something to quench your thirst as well, the ice might not be for you.
I had some concern tho regarding the hygiene of the place. It is normal for a korean bbq restaurant to be somewhat sticky for all the oil drippings and the smoke inside the restaurant. This is tolerable if you're sitting after the previous customers. But we came right after the restaurant open. They should have time to clean it better. The floor was really oily, that I can slide my feet around. The table was really sticky to my skin, and leave yellowish tint on my clothes.
It is either they haven't cleaned in through, or they might have use an inappropriate cleaner for the table.
4/5 for...
